The Sky Blues have completed their 1Oth summer signing with the capture of Trinidad and Tobago World Cup star Chris Birchall from Midlands neighbours Port Vale on a three-year deal.
The deal, valued at £300k, will see the talented midfielder link-up with his international team mate Stern John at the Ricoh this term and is a further signal of City's intent to push for a place back in the Premiership.
The 22-year-old has long been touted as a player destined for a big future in the game and since coming through the ranks at Vale Park the all-action middle man has made over 90 appearances for the League One side.
Birchall had an impressive summer out in Germany as the Soca Warriors made their debut at the World Cup, and while the Caribbean nation may have failed to progress past the group stages the midfielder made a big impression, especially in his display against the England midfield of Lampard and Gerrard.
Managing Director Paul Fletcher admitted his delight at the acquisition of the Stafford-born player and believes it is the sign of things to come at the Ricoh.
"Everyone at the Club is delighted that we have been able to get Chris here. He is a player who fits into our plans perfectly and is consistent with our aim of lowering the overall age of the squad as the manager builds a team to take us forward.
"As he showed at the World Cup Chris is a player who can mix it with the best and we are all looking forward to seeing him in a City shirt this season." |
