Trio get Champions axe Friday 14 July, 2006

Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina will all miss out on the Champions League next season after being found guilty of wrongdoing in the Calciopoli probe.
The three clubs all finished in the top four of Serie A last term but tonight’s verdicts have, unless they successfully appeal, ended their European Cup dreams.
Juve and Fiorentina will miss out on the continent’s most glamorous club competition after they were demoted to the Second Division.
Although Milan have maintained their Serie A status, they were docked 44 points from last season’s tally and therefore have ‘failed’ to qualify for Europe.
As a result, Inter will now be joined in the Champions League by the next best-placed teams in the shape of Roma, Palermo and Chievo Verona. The latter two sides would have to get through the preliminary round.
Meanwhile, Lazio won’t play in the UEFA Cup after last season’s sixth placed team were also condemned to the Second Division. Livorno may take their spot instead along with Empoli and Parma.
Friday night’s decisions will also change the landscape of both Serie A and Serie B for the 2006-07 campaign.
As it stands, depending on the outcome of the appeals of all four clubs, the First and Second Division will look like this…
Serie A: Ascoli, Atalanta, Cagliari, Catania, Chievo, Empoli, Inter, Lecce, Livorno, Messina, Milan (-15pts), Palermo, Parma, Reggina, Roma, Sampdoria, Siena, Torino, Treviso, Udinese.
Serie B: Albinoleffe, Arezzo, Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Cesena, Crotone, Fiorentina (-12pts), Frosinone, Genoa, Juventus (-30pts), Lazio (-7pts), Mantova, Modena, Napoli, Pescara, Piacenza, Rimini, Spezia, Triestina, Verona, Vicenza. |
