Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Manchester United's maturing youngsters as they powered their way past FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League.
The 3-0 victory at Old Trafford all but guaranteed The Red Devils' safe passage to the next stage of the tournament.
United were forced into some late changes to the line-up just before kick-off, and Ferguson was pleased with the response he got from the team and particularly stand-in skipper Wayne Rooney.
"We had a real nightmare in the warm-up, Rio Ferdinand cricked his neck and Ryan Giggs had some sickness before the game, so it was a real quandary of who to put in," Ferguson told Sky Sports News.
"It happened so quickly, it was only 10 minutes from kick-off time and I'm looking around the outfield players. I thought 'Give it to someone who'll respond to it, who you'll get a reaction from', so we did that.
"After that I thought about Edwin van der Sar with his experience and personality, I overlooked that, but nonetheless we won and everyone shared that after the game."
Paul Scholes set up the win with a stunningly struck first in the 38th minute and Ferguson was impressed with the midfielder and the younger side developing around him.
"It's Paul's first goal of the year, obviously he missed the second half of last season, and John O'Shea's first of the season so it's always healthy that," the Scotsman added.
"They were quite a decent technical side and we spoke about that before the game and watched videos of them and we realised if you gave them a lot of time they can play.
"The most important thing for us was our attacking impetus we had good speed and penetration. We made a lot of chances, which is good.
"It's important to keep our momentum going, we're top of the group. We want to win all the games and if we win there then we're through."
United take on Copenhagen away next in the competition, as they look to book their place in the next round with a win on November 1. |
