Sir Alex Ferguson felt Manchester United were 'very lucky' to beat Crewe Alexandra in the Carling Cup.
A goal late into extra time from debutant Kieran Lee clinched a 2-1 success for the holders at Gresty Road in the third round.
But Ferguson was unhappy with his team's performance and felt the League One side deserved to go through to a fourth round tie with Southend United.
"We were very lucky," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1. "I think we used up a bit of luck tonight.
"Credit to Crewe. I think they were the better team. They created many chances, and we missed some ourselves.
"It was a pretty open game and I thought it was played at a great pace, with a lot of energy spent in the game.
"We were a bit careless in the whole performance. Right from the start we gave Crewe a foot in the game and we shouldn't be allowing them to do that."
United fielded a mixture of seasoned internationals and rookies, but Ferguson believes his players lacked the application of their opponents.
He added: "Football never changes. It's an amazing game because there were seven internationals for Manchester United and we were expected to win.
"But you have to work as hard as the other team before you have the right to win a football match and we didn't work as hard as them.
"I think Mikael Silvestre it was his first game for five or six weeks, Gabriel Heinze needs games and these kind of games will help them.
"Young David Jones it was his first game of the season, Kieran Richardson has shown he needs games, but it's no excuse  . I was looking for a better performance from the whole team." |
