Watford have confirmed that striker Marlon King has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
The Jamaican international suffered a knee injury against Arsenal last month, but it looked as if he was on his way back to full fitness and was considered 50/50 for Saturday's victory over Middlesbrough.
However, manager Adrian Boothroyd has now revealed that King will play no further part this term after undergoing an operation.
"We have some bad news on Marlon, he is out for the season," Boothroyd told Sky Sports.
"He went in for a routine cartilage operation, but whilst he was in there they discovered a bit of bone had come away from the femur, so that has been corrected.
"It is bad news for us, bad news for Marlon - but because he is such a key player he will be in the dressing room and cheering on the lads and he will have to be my assistants' assistant for a year and then get back to playing in The Premiership next year."
