Scottish champions Rangers have completed the signing of Paris Saint Germain skipper Jose Karl Pierre-Fanfan, as Alex McLeish has again turned to France in his search for new talent.

The capture of the 29-year-old on a three-year deal follows the summer signing of Marseille man Brahim Hemdani, with Fanfan successfully agreeing terms and completing a medical at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

The strong stopper had endured a dismal season at PSG as the capital club suffered from poor form and a ruinous atmosphere off the pitch, but will now look forward to starting his career with the Scottish giants.

Le Championnat has proved to be a fertile ground for McLeish after previously turning to France for the likes of Jean Alain Boumsong and Dado Prso, and Fanfan will be well aware of the Croatian hit-man after the pair spent a spell at Monaco together.

Rangers are yet to learn the future of Greek stopper Sotirios Krygiakos, who has been linked with a move to Bolton, and McLeish was pleased to land Fanfan from under the noses of Real Mallorca to further strengthen his defensive options.

"It's important that we cover the Krygiakos situation because we are not sure where we are with that at the moment," McLeish told the club's official website.

"Fanfan was one of a number of players who were put into me.

"I'm aware of his pedigree over the last few years of his career and I believe that he could fit the bill.

"PSG underachieved last season but Fanfan is quite experienced.

"He has been around and he has the drive and determination that is required at this football club."

Ex-Internazionale midfielder Matias Almeyda has returned to his native Argentina to play for River Plate.

The 31-year-old was out of contract after a spell with Quilmes, and Almeyda jumped at the chance of a one-year deal at River Plate.

"I am very happy for having the chance to come back home. I feel a little more safe now in Buenos Aires and that's why I have accepted River's proposal," said Almeyda.

"When I came back to Argentina some time ago I went to Independiente but it wasn't safe to live in Buenos Aires.

"Then I accepted to play for Quilmes with my friend Nelson Vivas but as he had to go because of the fight that he had with the officials I also decided not to renew my contract and I am very happy that River has offered me a place now."

River have been on the look-out for an adequate replacement for the recently departed Javier Mascherano, and the Argentine club see Almeyda as an ideal short-term option. However, Almeyda was keen to point out that he is a different player to Mascherano.

"I know that I arrive at River to replace an excellent player like Javier Mascherano, who has left to play for Corinthians. I am not the same type of player because he is much younger than me but I have a lot of experience in football and I think that I can be very useful for River.

"Anyway, this is a big personal challenge in my career because River is a very serious club and their supporters are different from all the others, so this is like starting my career again for me."

Marseille have reportedly agreed terms to sign former France international Sabri Lamouchi.

The experienced midfielder is tipped to link up with l'OM in the coming days after being heavily linked with a switch to Stade Velodrome over the summer.

Lamouchi is currently contracted to Internazionale but spent last season on loan with Genoa in Serie B.

He is not wanted by Inter and the 33-year-old is trying to negotiate the cancellation of his contract with the Italian giants.

Once this is achieved, Lamouchi will be free to complete his move to Marseille and he could be joined by Lucas Bernardi from Monaco.

The Argentina international is a target for l'OM, with the club's new transfer director Henri Biancheri reportedly in contact with Bernardi.

Biancheri had spent the bulk of his career with Monaco before leaving for Marseille and is trying to tempt Bernardi, who spent the 2000/01 season at Stade Velodrome, into joining him.
