REVIEW: NEWCASTLE UTD. 1 - DEPORTIVO 2 (INTERTOTO)

Thursday 4th August, 2005 -- Deportivo will play for the first time a final playing for European competitions after they conquered a new victory in England. The Galicians were in disadvantage at the end of the first half, but they scored two consecutive goals that let them secure the victory. Andrade and Munitis are the heroes of the night.

BEFORE TO THE MATCH
As was expected Caparrs presented a starting lineup with Duscher, Sergio and Scaloni. The objective was to control the game in midfield. The duo between Rben Castro and Tristn were selected for the striking zone. Their main support was Pedro Munitis in the right wing. Meanwhile, Newcastle's boss, Graeme Souness decided to send Emre and Scott Parker to the pitch since the beginning. It was their debut with the Magpies.

FIRST HALF
The game begun with extremely precautions in both sides. The importance of the match caused that the first 15 minutes were played in midfield. The first chance of the night arrived at minute 17th with a shot of Emre that was saved by Molina. Pedro Munitis and Joan Capdevila were the main danger against the home side. The Catalan defender had the better chance for Depor when he missed to score after he received a cross from the right corner, but his shot ended far from his target.

The goal for Newcastle arrived at minute 37th. Faye made a cross that Bowyer missed, but Milner was there in order to sent a cross in front of Molina. The reaction of the Galicians was immediately when Jorge Andrade took advantage of a loose ball in Newcastle's area. It's his second goal in two games and his third with the shirt of Deportivo.

SECOND HALF
The start of second half couldn't be better for Deportivo, Pedro Munitis took advantage of an error between Robbie Elliot and Given. The Cantabrian striker was very wise to intercept a bad pass of the English defender and he scored the goal despite of the defensive effort of Stephen Carr. The reaction of Souness was clear, he replaced Feye with Ameobi in order to search for the three goals that his team was needing.

The pressure from the Magpies started to increase, Shearer had an occasion to score, but Molina saved the situation. Munitis continued to present more danger and he had another opportunity to score, but Given sent the ball into corner. Then, Caparrs started to move his bench, he sent Luque and Juanma to replace the duo Tristn - Rben Castro in a new intent to control the game.

Shearer had his best chance of the night when he sent over the bar a cross from Milner. The luck continues to be negative for the home side as Ameobi failed in two occasions, the last one was a clear opportunity when he couldn't connect the ball properly in front of Francisco Molina. The Valencian goalkeeper was a key factor in the match as he stopped several occasions of the Magpies.

Newcastle continued with their efforts and Emre hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from 35 meters. The Turkish was the best man of his team despite of been playing his first game at St. James Park. The match ended with Deportivo holding back all the intents of the home side.

REACTIONS TO THE VICTORY AT ST. JAMES PARK

Thursday 4th August, 2005 -- The planned strategy of Caparrs worked and Deportivo conquered a ticket to the Intertoto's final. It was the fourth victory of the Galicians playing in England for European competitions. Now Depor will have to face Olympique Marseille in the final. The first match will occur next Tuesday at Riazor.

Coach Joaqun Caparrs was very happy with the result and the performance of his men. In his opinion the squad demonstrated an impressive concentration in the field: "All the men played well and those who didn't play gave their support to the team. Everyone from the best man to the last technician has been there supporting the team. We don't have to pick out individuals because the overall team performance has been great - fantastic. I was also happy with the level of aggression. Newcastle tried to make us play at their pace and if it needed aggression not to do that, then so be it."

The Sevillan coach had also good comments about the rival's performance: "We have to value this eliminatory knowing that we played against an important club. Newcastle played the Champions League in the past and their fans created a lot of pressure against us. That makes bigger our victory."

Pedro Munitis was once again the most important factor for Deportivo; however, he preferred to talk about the work of his teammates: "I believe that we played a very complete match, we did a good work in every minute and the team must be satisfied. We were in troubles when they scored the goal, but the team reached a wonderful recuperation."

Newcastle's manager Graeme Souness admitted that the second goal was catastrophic for his team: "It killed us off. It's cost us dearly. I would hate to think we would give goals like those away during the season. particularly the second one. But the first goal was also a poor one to concede, although we would have to see it again to know exactly who was most to blame” Despite the frustration, Souness admitted the quality of his rivals: "It's disappointing to be out of Europe, but we were playing a very good team. Deportivo are a team used to playing in the Champions League and they proved that over the two legs."
