Player Notes:
Nicol was bought to challenge Phil Neal for the right-back position. Neal was not to be moved and Nicol slotted in at right midfield. In his first full season he came second in PFA's vote for the most promising player of the year in 1983/84 behind Luton's Paul Walsh. The season almost ended in disaster after he missed Liverpool's first penalty in the shoot-out against AS Roma in the European cup final, but Liverpool still won.
Nicol is one of the most versatile players that football has ever seen. He was a great defender as well as superb in attack. He scored some brilliant goals, showing off masterful finishes that would put most strikers to shame. He even lead the goalscoring charts at the beginning of the 1987/88 season, after scoring 7 goals in his first 7 games, including a superb hat-trick against Newcastle. He was simply unbelievable. Nicol's importance was officially recognised with a FWA player of the year award in 1988/89, after filling 6 different positions that season.

Player Notes:
John Wark burst unto the scene in 1975. The 18-year-old was a part of Ipswich's successful youth team and the centre-half who had been fifth choice at the beginning of the season, was by now starring in the first team. He later developed into a free-scoring midfielder playing 384 matches and scoring 136 goals in his first spell at the club. Wark was a master of arriving late in the box and striking with precision. He was already a star, being crowned PFA's player of the year in Ipswich's successful UEFA cup-winning 1980/81 season.
Wark was Liverpool's leading goalscorer with 27 goals in his first season. He scored 18 goals in 40 league games, continued his incredible striking rate in Europe, scoring 5 in 9 games, 4 in 7 FA cup games, netted three hat-tricks and scored his 100th league goal in a game, incidentally enough against Ipswich. Injuries ruined his double season, he had a lot of niggly ones but a broken leg in March meant the end of further glory and missing out on the World cup in Mexico. He only started 12 games in 1986/87 and halfway through the magical 1987/88 season he was on his way back to Ipswich. Wark moved back to his old position as centre-half at Ipswich, but a poor contract offer by his standards prompted him to go to Middlesbro' after being voted the club's player of the year in two successive seasons. Wark returned "home" one year later for his third spell and played 6 more years until his retirement at 40. |
