The opening match of the OFC Nations Cup, which will also kick-off the second stage of the confederation's qualification campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, takes place on Saturday with New Zealand and Fiji determined to make a flying start.

On the pitch, New Zealand look worthy of their favourites' tag, with Celtic striker Chris Killen arriving in Auckland today fresh from his first start - and his maiden Scottish Premier League goal - for the Bhoys. The All Whites will be without Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Nelsen, who has a hamstring injury, leaving Wellington Phoenix midfielder Tim Brown with the captain's armband.

New Zealand's squad has a youthful look to it with 13 players possessing less than 18 caps. The bulk of the experience comes from Ivan Vicelich (60 caps) and Killen (26 caps), with Duncan Oughton (18 caps), Leo Bertos (18 caps), Shane Smeltz (16 caps) and Dave Mulligan (16 caps) representing a fresh-faced support group of seasoned club professionals plying their trade mainly in the Australian A-League and in USA's Major League Soccer.

Much will depend upon Killen, who now assumes the striking role left vacant by the retired Vaughan Coveney, New Zealand's all-time top scorer. Killen's credentials to fill those empty boots look more than sound with 15 international goals already alongside his name. His CV also shows stints with Manchester City, Oldham Athletic, Hibernian and now Celtic, where he most recently featured in the SPL against Gretna and in the UEFA Champions League against AC Milan.

Fiji boss Juan Carlos Buzzetti - Tamanisau aside - has a squad that has been in place for well over a year with the majority of players coming from Fiji's number one football club, Ba. Central defender Peni Finau captains both Ba and Fiji and is seen as the rock upon which club and country can depend. Finau's brother - Osea Vakatalesau - the towering, pacy, striker, also a team-mate at Ba, hit ten goals at the XIII South Pacific Games Samoa 2007 and struck consistently during last season's OFC O-League competition.

Roy Krishna represents the future of Fiji international football and the jet-heeled 19-year-old is keen to take a leading role after being third-choice striker behind Josaia Bukalidi and Osea Vakatalesau. With veteran striker Esala Masi's international future uncertain following a knee injury prior to the XIII South Pacific Games, Krishna's hopes of seeing more pitch time look better than they did at the start of the year and his winner in Fiji's 1-0 win over a New Zealand XI in Lautoka will have done his cause no harm.

Relief
After the match had been in doubt due to the visa issues, NZF CEO Graham Seatter expressed relief that it would take place. "We're obviously delighted that the game has been confirmed. There was always a belief that it would happen but there was also a degree of doubt so it's nice that doubt has gone," Seatter said.

"This is obviously a very important match. It's the start of a very long campaign that the players are committed to, one that we're (NZF) are committed to and hopefully the public will get in behind."

Seatter is hoping for a strong show of support from New Zealanders on Saturday as Auckland's Fijian community is expected to come out in force. "Auckland doesn't have much high level football now so hopefully this is an occasion that people will grab."

FIFA cancels New Zealand-Fiji

The Bureau of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup ™ today confirmed the cancellation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, OFC preliminary competition match between New Zealand and Fiji, originally scheduled to be played in Auckland on 13 October 2007.

The Bureau took this decision as a result of the New Zealand government's refusal to grant a visa to the Fijian goalkeeper, Simione Tamanisau, thus depriving the Fijian team of being able to field its full team in the upcoming qualifying match.

Upon review of the situation, the Bureau found that in this case, the goalkeeper should have the right to play. Therefore, in order to preserve this sporting principle as well as the competitive integrity of the 2010 FIFA World Cup preliminary competition, FIFA could not allow the match to take place under the current conditions.

In view of the above situation, the Bureau will meet before the end of this month to decide when and where this fixture will take place.

FIFA also confirmed that the second leg of the series, the Fiji-New Zealand match to be played on 17 October 2007 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Fiji, will take place as originally scheduled.

Furthermore, FIFA would like to emphasise the cooperation and good faith efforts of New Zealand Football, the Fiji Football Association and the Oceania Football Confederation in their respective attempts to resolve this issue.

Malagasy begin journey in style

A goal deluge marked the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying section in the host continent as Madagascar hit six past the nearby Comoros Islands over the weekend.

It was a stark introduction to the rigours of the competition for Comoros Islands, who have only been FIFA members for the last two years and were making their first appearance in the FIFA World Cup preliminaries.

Faneva Andriatsima marked his return home from a recent move to Nantes in France with four goals as the Malagasy won 6-2 to establish a four-goal cushion ahead of the return leg of the tie in Moroni on 17 November.

Nevertheless, it was Comoros Islands who gave themselves hope of a fairy tale debut by taking the lead at the Stade Municipal Mahamasina in only the eighth minute.

This dream was extinguished by Andriatsima, however, with the striker taking just 47 minutes to complete his hat-trick before adding one more for good measure.

"It was thanks to the effort and the cohesion of the team that I got the goals," he said after the match.

"I think the team is showing some progress and we have made a great start to the campaign," Andriatsima said after his match-winning performance in Antananarivo.

Andriatsima believes his form owes much to a move to Ligue 2 outfit Nantes, where he is part of the reserves but is hoping for promotion to the first team squad soon.

There were two more goals on Sunday for Madagascar from Rija Juvence Rakotomandimby and Jean de l'Or Tsaralaza, who completed the scoring ten minutes from time.

Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign resumes in Freetown on Wednesday when Sierra Leone host Guinea Bissau in their first leg tie.

（曼谷）東南亞勁旅泰國週一在世界盃亞洲區首輪資格賽次回合賽，客場以7比1橫掃澳門，以13比2懸殊總比分晉級。

儘管排出次選陣容，但泰國仍然游刃有餘，甚至打出比首回合賽更佳的表現。

從未打進世界盃的泰國，在上半場以3比0遙遙領先，提早鎖定大局。

New Zealand draw first blood

After 1192 days of absence, New Zealand got their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on track with an important 2-0 away victory over Fiji in Lautoka.

A Ivan Vicelich goal gave the All Whites a slender one-nil lead at the interval, while Shane Smeltz strike in the 86th minute helped to settle any lingering nerves Ricki Herbert's side may have had.

In the 32nd minute, Vicelich latched on to a Jeremy Christie ball played over an advancing Fijian defence, and took advantage of some confusion, and claims of offside, caused by a retreating Chris Killen before lobbing the ball over Simone Tamanisau.

New Zealand keeper Mark Paston was not tested during the first half, although Fiji did cause some trouble for the All Whites back four either side of the half-hour mark through Roy Krishna, but the young striker saw both of his efforts blocked by New Zealand defenders.

Fiji started much brighter than New Zealand after the break and could have equalised in the 52nd minute through Osea Vakatalesau, but he saw his looping close range rebound off the crossbar. The loose ball fell dangerously into the six yard box, but Paston reacted quickly to claw it away from the feet of two Fijian players.

The All Whites quickly got back into their stride and once again threatened the New Zealand goal. Indeed, they saw two headers from Smeltz find the back of net, only for the assistant's flag to rule both out for offside.

However, with four minutes remaining, Smeltz had reason to celebrate. As Fiji were pressing for an equaliser, the Wellington Phoenix striker found space on the left before cutting inside and firing the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net.

After the game, New Zealand coach Herbert was satisfied with his side's display. "The pleasing thing for me was that showed some real character," he said. "I'm happy with how we ground it out. We talked extensively at the hotel beforehand about how it didn't matter what the performance looked like, we just wanted to get a result.

"We stuttered along at times and probably didn't get players forward like we wanted to but at the end of the day I'm delighted for the players because it's three points. That'll give everybody a bit of confidence and it's given us some momentum going into next month's home and away fixtures against Vanuatu."

On 17 November Herbert's squad travel to Port Vila for their second successive away fixture, before entertaining the same opposition four days later in Wellington.

Fiji will be looking to bounce back from the loss against New Zealand and gain revenge for their defeat in the final of the South Pacific Games when they face New Caledonia home and away on the same dates.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup are meeting before the end of this month to decide when and where last Saturday's cancelled fixture between New Zealand and Fiji will take place.

Myanmar-China switched to Malaysia

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ second leg qualifier between Myanmar and China PR, originally scheduled to be played in Yangon, will now take place in Malaysia on 28 October. The decision was taken after both the Myanmar Football Federation and the Chinese Football Association requested for the contest to be played on neutral ground.

FIFA is to finalise the exact venue, although it will not be Kuala Lumpur which will instead host the qualifier between Malaysia and Bahrain on the same day. China and Myanmar will contest the first leg of their preliminary in Foshan, in southern Guangdong province, on Sunday.

東帝汶 2:3 香港


香港代表隊在10月21日舉行的2010世界盃外圍賽亞洲區預賽作客以3:2擊敗東帝汶。

香港隊在上半場由鄭少偉在26分鐘先開記錄領先1:0及後在36分鐘憑對方的烏龍球將記錄拉開至2:0，但主隊在完半場前追回1球，香港隊領先2:1完上半場。

鄭少偉在下半場早段再入1球為香港隊將記錄拉開至3:1，雖然東帝汶及後再追1球將比分追成2:3，但香港隊最終力保3:2的勝果至完場。

次回合將會在10月28日下午3時在香港大球場舉行。
