Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Gambia, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Nigeria,Sierra Leone and Tanzania all had victory in common on Matchday 5 ofAfrican Zone qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.Their rewards, however, were different on a thrilling day across thehost continent.
For Cameroon, desperate to erase the heartache of failing to makeGermany 2006, the prize was securing a first-place finish in Group Aand moving into the last 20. The Indomitable Lions roared from behindto edge Cape Verde Islands in their top-of-the-table duel. The BlueSharks went ahead six minutes before the interval, Lito their marksman, but second-half goals from Achille Emana and Alain Nkong earned thevisitors a win that took them four points clear of their opponents withone round to play.
The section's other contest, between Mauritius and Tanzania, was purelyabout pride, and that was enough to encourage an enchanting first halfat the King George V stadium in Curepipe. It produced five goals, allof them in a frenetic 22-minute period and four of them in favour ofthe Taifa Stars.
Shadrack Nsajigwa opened the scoring on 12 minutes, before WesleyMarquette immediately pulled Mauritius level. Nizzar Khalfan restoredTanzania's advantage, and then explosive forward Jerson Tegete scoredtwice to put his side in the comfort zone. The second half was notshort on chances, but it was curiously void of goals. The 4-1 successmoved Tanzania on to five points from as many matches, four clear oftheir opponents, who are now certain to finish at the foot of the pool.
Nigeria, the only side safely through before the action began, did nottake their foot off the pedal. Although South Africa asked a lot ofquestions of their guests in Port Elizabeth, the Super Eagles defendedresolutely en route to their fifth clean sheet in as many games, andmaintained one of only two 100 per cent records in the CAF preliminarycompetition thanks to a fine goal from Ikechukwu Uche. The Bafana Bafana, by contrast, suffered the ignominy of missing out of a berth at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2010.
Sierra Leone moved three points clear of South Africa and into therunners-up spot in Group 4. Kewullay Conteh and Sheriff Sumaestablished a two-goal cushion for the hosts, before Juvenal Edjogograbbed a last-gasp consolation for Equatorial Guinea, whosequalification chances were ended in Freetown.
Tunisia, meanwhile, remain three points adrift of Burkina Faso afterthe Group 9 leaders held their North African visitors to a 0-0 draw inOuagadougou. Four points further back in third are Burundi, this aftera 2-1 victory away to Seychelles secured by goals either side ofhalf-time from Henry Mbazumutima and Claude Nahimana.

Group 6 remains wide open going into the concluding matchday afterSenegal, revelations of Korea/Japan 2002, lost 3-2 in Algeria andGambia beat Liberia 3-0 at home. Goals from Yacine Bezzaz, Rafik Saifiand Anthar Yahia proved enough for the Desert Foxes to replace theiropponents atop of the section.
Njogu Demba, who stars for Brann in Norway, scored twice to inspire hiscountry to victory over Liberia, now out of the fight to advance.Algeria have nine points, one more than both Gambia and Senegal.
