Viola "don't need new Toni"
Fiorentina transfer guru Pantaleo Corvino insists they do not need another big name striker to replace Bayern-bound Luca Toni.
Today the two clubs made statements confirming only details stood between the completion of the £7.5m move to Munich, robbing the Viola of their top scorer over the past two seasons.
“Selling Toni to Bayern is not reducing the power of this side. We made a promise to the player and we maintained it. That is all,” Corvino told ‘Radio Radio.’
“We have decided to focus on Arturo Lupoli, Giampaolo Pazzini, Adrian Mutu and Valeri Bojinov. There will be no other arrivals upfront.”
This means Fiorentina are going for youth above experience in their return to the UEFA Cup next term, as apart from 28-year-old Romanian Mutu, the others are all Under-21 internationals.
Toni was Capocannoniere in Serie A and Europe in 2006 with 31 goals, so these are some very big shoes to fill.
“There were the same complaints and fears when I was at Lecce and Cristiano Lucarelli left,” noted Corvino.
“Then came Javier Ernesto Chevanton. And when he went, we got Bojinov. Then Mirko Vucinic.”
The director of sport has become an integral part of Fiorentina’s revival, as he earned a reputation at Lecce for being a fantastic talent scout.
Reinforcements are due for other areas of the squad and, despite Chievo’s denial, there were confirmations that a move is on the card for Franco Semioli.
“We have not concluded anything yet, but we are looking for wide men and he has the right characteristics for us.”
Youngsters Manuel Pasqual and Riccardo Montolivo will stay, but Fabio Liverani may not find a place in the Viola’s future.
“We will make the decision along with Cesare Prandelli, as it depends on the system. If we do change, we will be honest with the player and together decide on his future.” |
