Torino call in Novellino

Walter Novellino is just hours away from being named as the new Torino Coach after he reportedly agreed terms with the Granata.

The tactician ended his five-year stay at Sampdoria on Thursday following a friendly with Savona and Novellino, who has been replaced by Walter Mazzarri, seems to have landed a new job.

Whispers in Italy claim that Novellino has already met Torino chief Urbano Cairo over a possible move.

It’s understood that Novellino will sign a one-year contract, with an option for a second, in return for a £570,000 a season salary.

Cairo will now have to hold talks with Gianni De Biasi where he is expected to show the tactician the door despite his desire to remain.

Novellino, who made his Serie A debut as a player with Torino in 1972, has admitted that he would be interested in the role.

“Being a target for prestigious clubs is important for me, it means that I have done a good job in the past,” he noted. “As to the future, I will decide before June 4.”

Samp confirm Mazzarri arrival

Walter Mazzarri is the new Sampdoria Coach, the Serie A club have confirmed on Friday.

News of the appointment was already widely accepted as fact last night, but the outfit have officially announced his arrival this afternoon.

“Sampdoria announce that a two-year agreement has been finalised with Walter Mazzarri, who will be the new first team Coach,” read a Doria statement.

“Mazzarri and his staff, including Giuseppe Pondrelli [physical trainer], Nunzio Papale [goalkeeper trainer] and Nicolò Frustalupi [technical assistant] will be officially unveiled on Tuesday, June 5 at 12.00pm, at the Starhotel President Hotel in Genoa.

“In the meantime, we wish to thank Walter Novellino and his staff for the professionalism and dedication shown in the past extraordinary five seasons and we wish the mister all the best for the continuation of his career.”

Meanwhile, Sampdoria have confirmed that the club will take part in the Intertoto Cup, the summer competition which may allow the Genoa-based outfit to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

Matteo Sereni has told Lazio that he is ready to become their new No 1 once Angelo Peruzzi hangs up his gloves.

The goalkeeper looked all set to leave the Olimpico after a problematic stint in the capital, but he would now consider remaining at a club who may struggle to replace Peruzzi next term.

“There has been no meeting, but we have reopened our door to Lazio,” said Sereni’s wife and agent Silvia.

“We’ve done so after I understood that Matteo would have regretted leaving Rome and the Lazio environment.

“I have tried to contact Claudio Lotito, but the President is always busy. When I finally speak with him then we will try to find a solution,” she added.

“In any case, there are many clubs interested in Matteo’s services.”

The main problem for Sereni could be represented by the fact that Lazio are in arrears with their salary payments to the former Sampdoria and Ipswich man.

“So far Matteo has been paid just a fourth of the wages that the club owes him,” Silvia Sereni concluded.

Chievo end Del Neri contract Friday 1 June, 2007

Luigi Del Neri has parted company with Chievo following their relegation into Serie B, announced the club.

The Coach had pledged to stay on “if the club wanted” even after the 2-0 loss to Catania last weekend sent them down.


“We have decided not to continue together,” announced director of sport Giovanni Sartori. “We were unable to wash away the doubts that both us and he had.”


Del Neri had been the key to Chievo’s status as the Flying Donkeys – a nickname earned when rivals Verona said they would enter Serie A when donkeys flew – by leading them to their first ever top flight campaign in 2001-02.


He moved on to unsuccessful spells at Porto, Roma and Palermo before returning to the Stadio Bentegodi mid-season to replace Bepi Pillon.


Straight after their relegation, Del Neri had offered to remain at the helm in Serie B, but that is no longer an option.


“It has all happened so quickly,” added Sartori. “Give us a few days and then we will resolve the issue of the Coach.”


The current favourite is former Chievo fan captain and Del Neri’s assistant manager Maurizio D’Angelo. Others include Stefano Pioli, who was sacked by Parma this term, and current Brescia boss Rolando Maran.


Alberto Malesani and Gianni De Biasi, both fired this week by Udinese and Torino, are also in the running.
