Wage Demands Cost Us Henry, Could Cost Us Eto'o - Galliani
AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani revealed that they were close to beating Barcelona to Thierry Henry, but simply could not afford his 10m a year net wages.
zoom - galleria Henry is set to sign a "star" contract at Barcelona that will see him earn 200,000 euros per week, and Galliani insists that that is why Milan lost out on the striker.
With the more lucrative television contracts, and more lucrative endorsements, top Spanish and English clubs can afford such wages.
Shirt sales help give back a part of that, but Milan would still have been struggling to balance their books given the taxation rules, Galliani insisted.
"We were very close to the Frenchman, and Leonardo had worked hard on convincing him," the Milan vice president explained.
"We would not have had problems handing over 24 million euros to Arsenal, but the 10m per season net (after tax) wages are not sustainable for us.
"To be clear, Barcelona’s contract with Henry costs them less than 15m gross (before tax), but for us, the same wages would cost 20m.
"Unfortunately, this is the truth now. We have to get used to it."
He also insisted that Milan would remain in the hunt for Samuel Eto'o, but could face similar problems if and when Barcelona decided to make him available.
"At the moment Eto’o is not on the market and he says he wants to stay at Barcelona," Galliani said. "However, he is at the top of our list and I have never hidden that. The problem, again, is the difference in the financial regime in Spain. We experienced the same problem with Henry."
In the case of Eto'o, even the transfer fee could prove prohibitive, though, with Barcelona unlikely to accept anything less that 50 million euros for the Cameroon international. It immediately puts the Premiership clubs in pole position.
