Abbiati set for Spain? Tuesday 26 June, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports in Italy suggest that Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati might join Atletico Madrid in the near future.
The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with Torino and looks set to leave the Rossoneri on a permanent basis this summer, with the Liga side emerging as the favourites for his signature.
“I have not asked for a pay increase to join Torino,” said Abbiati, referring to the club’s request to lower his wage to £535,000 a year.
I would be glad to stay, but on the other hand I can’t cut my salary every year to remain with the Granata,” added the ex-Azzurri international.
The goalkeeper is currently on holiday in Formentera and flew to Madrid yesterday to discuss his position with Atletico officials.
Los Colchoneros are reportedly ready to offer Abbiati £1m-per-season to lure the ‘keeper into moving to the Estadio Vicente Calderon, where he would provide an alternative to Leo Franco.
Representatives from the Spanish outfit are expected in Italy shortly and the No 1 could undergo his medical and be officially unveiled to the Madrid fans by the end of this week.
Milan director general Ariedo Braida had stated that the Rossoneri would not create any obstacles and were ready to extend his loan deal with Torino if the player opts to remain at the Stadio Olimpico.
“We have already stated that Abbiati will decide his own future, choosing between Torino and the proposals from Spain,” explained the official.
“If he chooses Toro, then he will stay with them. I do not see problems in agreeing to a free loan deal,” concluded Braida.
