Roma defender Cristian Chivu has rejected Real Madrid - because they are not offering him enough cash.
The clubs agreed an 18 million euro fee on Wednesday but 26-year-old Chivu - whose contract expires at the end of next season - was offered a greater wage by Roma's Serie A rivals Internazionale, who withdrew from the bidding war for the Romania stopper because they were reluctant to stump up the full transfer fee.
"Real Madrid's wage offer was way below Inter's proposal," Chivu's agent Victor Becali declared. "Chivu will remain with Roma unless Real make a new offer."
Roma made it clear that they wanted to cash-in on the left-sided defender by not offering him a new, improved deal after he helped them finish second in Serie A this season, signing Juan from Bayer Leverkusen as a replacement. But it appears their determination to secure the same figure they paid Ajax for him four years ago could leave them empty-handed.
"If Chivu leaves as free agent next year, his future club could pay him a 7-8 million euro salary [around £100,000 per week] as they would not need to pay a transfer fee," Becali confirmed.
"Inter made Chivu a good offer but the clubs were unable to agree on a transfer fee."
Becali was keen to point out that Chivu would still like to move to the Spanish champions, but that they would have to revise their wage proposals.
"The ball is in Real Madrid's court now," he added.
"If the offer is not satisfactory, Chivu will see out his contract at Roma."
In the past Real's board have been notoriously reluctant to pay defensive players in the same bracket as their attacking "Galacticos", with the sacking of title-winning coach Fabio Capello implying that they are to return to this policy.
