Coleman has been linked with several jobs in England since being dismissed as Fulham manager just weeks before the end of last season.
Reports then surfaced on Wednesday that Sociedad were on the lookout for a new coach and were considering Coleman.
The Welshman was recommended to the Basque club by John Toshack - a former manager of Real Sociedad.
Coleman was verbally offered a three-year deal on Wednesday evening and he has now accepted after being given assurances about transfer funds.
He will replace Miguel Angel Lotina, who parted company with Sociedad following their relegation from La Liga.
Sociedad were relegated for the first time in 400 years on a dramatic final day of the season and Coleman will hope to steer the club back up at the first attempt.
Club president Maria De La Pena has said Coleman's arrival will bring 'freshness and new ideas' to Sociedad.
