Marbury to miss at least two more games, possibly longer if ankle requires surgery

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stephon Marbury will miss at least two more games and could require surgery on his left ankle.
Marbury went after practice Monday to see specialist Dr. William Hamilton, who found inflammation around a chronically fractured bone spur. Hamilton recommended Marbury wear a walking boot for three days before being evaluated with an MRI exam.
Marbury will miss games for the Knicks against Washington on Tuesday and at New Jersey on Wednesday, but told reporters at practice he would have surgery if it was recommended.
"If the doctor says I have bone spurs in my ankle and he says I need surgery, I'm going to get it," Marbury said. "I'm going to get it taken care of. I'm not going to wait or hesitate because that's my career."
Marbury didn't practice Saturday and missed Sunday's 89-65 victory over Detroit because his ankle was sore. He needed surgery to remove bone spurs from the same ankle after he was hurt in 2001, though the procedure was done over the summer.
This has already been the worst season of Marbury's 12-year career. He has missed 12 games, most after his father died during a game last month, and is averaging a career-low 13.9 points.
He also skipped a game in Phoenix, leaving the team after coach Isiah Thomas told him he was considering removing the point guard from the starting lineup.
"It's been tough," Marbury said. "This isn't the year that we expected, so I'm not happy with the way how things are going. But there's always next year."
Thomas said he didn't know how long Marbury would be out, but expected him to return sometime this season. He seemed to leave that in doubt before Sunday night's game, responding to a question about Marbury's frustration with the offense by saying: "He's not playing tonight so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it if he decides to play again."
Once one of the league's most durable players, Marbury has struggled to stay healthy in recent years. He was limited to 60 games two years ago because of shoulder and knee injuries, and missed eight games last season, mostly with a toe injury.
