Wenger fears Hleb departure

Arsene Wenger admits he is concerned Alexander Hleb will follow Mathieu Flamini to San Siro, albeit the Nerazzurri end.
The Arsenal boss was disappointed to lose midfielder Flamini on a free transfer to Milan this week, who turned down a £55,000 per week contract offer when the club refused to break its salary cap.
"It is a problem but we did not master this situation with Flamini," Wenger told a forum for Arsenal shareholders.
"I must say I am disappointed that he did that, but legally he can do it. When a player is out of contract he can sign where he wants."
Now there is the danger more Arsenal stars will jump ship and Hleb has been repeatedly linked with Inter.
Negotiations have been officially denied by the Nerazzurri, despite Wenger’s threats to report them to FIFA.
According to the latest reports in The Guardian, the Belarus international is offered a large increase on his £50,000 per week wages.
The former Stuttgart man has the option under Article 17 of FIFA’s transfer regulations to buy out the remaining two years of his Arsenal contract and leave for less than the £11.2m that the club paid for him in 2005.
It has been suggested that Arsenal may reluctantly negotiate a transfer fee with Inter to prevent that happening.
"What people say about the buy-out clause, it is not as simple as it looks. It is much more difficult and the clubs are reluctant to do that.
"We want to keep Hleb, we want him to be part of our team next year. It is as simple as that. We have lost one player, we do not want to lose more,” continued Wenger.
"I hope that 95% of the team, the core of the team, says 'come on, we have only just lost'.
"We were close this year, but we did not win and what I expect from my team is that, if you are a winner, you say 'let's come back next year and win'.
"If our players are not capable of doing that and just want to walk out for bigger contracts, for me, that would be the biggest disappointment." |
