Adriano: No more parties

Adriano explains how he has turned his life around by foregoing off the field pleasures for enjoyment in his football with Inter.

“I’m not back to my best yet, but I am on the right track,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The injury that forced me to sit on the sidelines for a month did not help, but I am in good shape now.”

The goal he scored against Panathinaikos in the Champions League ended a disastrous year for the Brazilian, whose career was at risk before he went to San Paolo for a six-month loan spell to rest and recuperate.

“That was the most difficult moment of my life. I was in a terrible state and couldn’t concentrate on the pitch. That awful time helped me to grow and not make the same mistakes again.

“I made so many errors, as I just wasn’t living the healthy and normal life a professional athlete should. Up until a year ago I didn’t have the desire nor the confidence to play.

“After the death of my father, I simply wasn’t the Adriano I once was. I lost myself, fell into depression and the situation got worse day by day.”

He reacted to the depression by self-medicating with excessive partying and alcohol.

“I was out dancing until 5am and then obviously couldn’t train properly. Now, I swear, I no longer want to go out clubbing. I won’t say I never will again, because after a game I can pop round with my friends, but certainly not until dawn.

“In this respect, I think I have already partied enough for a lifetime. Now I am a 100 per cent professional.”

One of the reasons for Adriano’s departure was the ill-tempered rapport with Roberto Mancini and he credits Jose Mourinho with helping to turn his life and career around.

“I call him often, sometimes twice a day, to ask if I did well in training and to get advice. It’s wonderful having a relationship like this with your Coach. I never want to let him down.”
