Newcastle have confirmed that they have no plans to bring back Joe Kinnear to fill their managerial void.

A report in Wednesday's press claimed that the veteran boss was poised to make a shock return to the St James' Park hot-seat.

The former Wimbledon chief was initially appointed following Kevin Keegan's exit last year before being forced to step aside due to health problems in February.

Ashley's decision to sell the club in the summer put Shearer in limbo, with the England international eager to be appointed on a full-time basis, but unable to take the post with new owners waiting to be installed.

Several parties have expressed an interest in meeting Ashley's £100million asking price, but despite continued negotiations a deal is yet to be struck.

A Magpies club statement read: "Reports in the press this morning that Joe Kinnear is to be appointed as Newcastle United manager are not true.

"The position remains that the club is still in the market to be sold and is still negotiating with prospective buyers."

Meanwhile the Chronicle understands that a new consortium have put in a bid to take over the Magpies.

The group have handed United 24 hours to accept their bid, which meets the asking price, or they will walk away.

Indeed, having provided proof of funds yet again, it is believed that both Seymour Pierce and the Newcastle regime are playing hardball.

The group insist they are the only serious bidders, but the Singapore-base Profitable Group claim that they bid for the club over a week ago.

Leeds United have taken striker Jermaine Beckford off the transfer list.

The striker has one year remaining on his current contract and had been placed on the transfer list in May after his agent rejected a new deal with the club.

But the player, who scored twice in United's 2-2 draw at Shelbourne on Tuesday, will remain at Elland Road after chairman Ken Bates confirmed on Friday that the striker's name had been taken off the transfer list.

"I've discussed the situation with Simon and we've taken Jermaine off the transfer list," the chairman told Yorkshire Radio.

"We're quite happy to keep him, he's under contract until the end of the season, and we're looking forward to him playing his part in getting us promoted this season.

"He didn't ask for a transfer remember. He asked for a wage increase which we offered, but his agent wanted more and we weren't willing to pay.

"Becks is very happy at Leeds. Whatever he has got he gives us, and he is one those players who even if he has a bad game he pops up and scores unlikely goals so he will always contribute.

"Hopefully he will score another 34 goals this season!"

Middlesbrough have confirmed that they have accepted a bid from an unnamed club for Mido.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate revealed earlier this week that he expected unsettled Mido to leave the club before the start of the new season.

Now a mystery club have had an undisclosed bid accepted by Middlesbrough for the former Tottenham hit-man.

Reports in Egypt suggest Mido's former club Zamalek are the mystery suitors as they look to bring the 26-year-old back to his homeland.

Mido is now expected to hold talks and undergo a medical at the club as he edges ever closer to a move away from the Riverside.

Profitable Group have withdrawn their interest in buying Newcastle United.

The Singapore-based group had been one of the leading candidates to take over at St James' Park.

But Sky Sports News understands that the group were unable to provide proof of funding of £100million needed to purchase the club.

The group, whose commercial director is former England international Steve McMahon, had stated its intention to bid for the club and to appoint Alan Shearer as manager.

But now the bid has fallen by the wayside, meaning a takeover before the start of the new season looks increasingly unlikely for the beleaguered North East giants.

Striker Martins joins Wolfsburg

Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg have completed the signing of striker Obafemi Martins from Newcastle on a four-year contract.

The Nigerian, 24, was quoted on Monday as saying he was keen on a move to the German outfit.

"The Bundesliga will soon be the best league in the world," he said. I hope the transfer happens."

Martins was signed by former Magpies boss Glenn Roeder in 2006 and scored 35 times for the Tyneside club.

He will join a forward line including Grafite and Edin Dzeko, who combined for a Bundesliga record 54 goals last season as Wolfsburg clinched their first title.
