Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong wants to leave the club for an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Magpies were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the campaign and are in danger of a player exodus while owner Mike Ashley finds a buyer for the club.

Bassong, 22, only moved to Newcastle from FC Metz last year and became a regular in the team's leaky defence.

Now the former France Under 21 international fears for his development if he plays at Championship level and is hoping reported interest from Arsenal and Tottenham materialises into a bid.

"I want to leave," Bassong told L'Equipe. "I want to develop in the Premier League."

"I will have to weigh up the pros and cons (of an offer), study the sporting project, the amount of playing time they would want to give me."

The Profitable Group has confirmed its interest in buying Newcastle but says any potential bid is at an early stage.

The Singapore-based group says it has expressed an initial interest in the club but no direct talks have yet been held.

The company released a statement on its website to clarify the situation two days after it emerged that it was preparing to launch a bid to buy out Mike Ashley.

Confirming it has made contact with investment bankers Seymour Pierce, the statement read: "The Profitable Group can confirm that it has expressed an initial interest in acquiring Newcastle United.
Preliminary discussion

"A preliminary discussion with the representatives appointed to handle the sale of the club has been held, but contrary to some reports, no direct talks have been held with either the owner, Mike Ashley, or the chairman [sic], Derek Llambias.

"The group consider the leaking of the group's interest in this matter unfortunate, and as supporters of Newcastle United, seek only to serve in the best interests of the club, the fans and the local community.

"The group will not be making any further comment at the present time."

It is understood the Profitable Group has been in touch with Seymour Pierce chairman Keith Harris, although its is one of several parties to have done so with others at more advanced stages in their prospective bids.

Race

One of the 'three or four' groups acknowledged by managing director Llambias to be in the race earlier this week is thought to be South African-based, while another originates from Oman.

In addition, former chairman Freddy Shepherd has been linked with another consortium.

However, potential buyers with a genuine interest will have to sign non-disclosure agreements and prove they can come up with the money both to meet Ashley's £100million asking price and service the club's remaining debt before substantive talks can begin.

Rick Parkinson, who has made his money from textiles, is ready to offer Ashley £90m for the club - which comes in at £10m less than the asking price announced at the start of this week. It is also reported he will make £30m available for transfers and another £20m or restructuring of the club.

Parkinson will be joined by four other businessmen in his attempt to take charge at St James' Park.

However, there appears to be doubt about the proposal with no-one aware of any such interest prior the announcement.

The consortium is yet to contact Seymour Pierce, the investment bankers handling the sale, although they claim they will be ready to do so within the next 10 days.

Four different prospective purchasers have declared a firm interest, the latest of them the Singapore-based Profitable Group.

Obafemi Martins has revealed that he would be willing to lead Newcastle's promotion push next season.

The Nigeria international had been expected to be among those heading for the exit this summer following the Magpies' relegation into the Championship.

However, he insists that helping the club bounce back into the top flight at the first time of asking remains his priority.

A hefty salary and mounting interest away from St James' Park could yet see him offloaded but, for now, Martins is planning for life in the second tier.

"I hope I am not sold," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"If the club decides to sell me I have no choice but to go. But my aim is to stay and help get Newcastle promoted next season.

"I love living in Newcastle and there are few better places to live and play.

"I know the club is for sale and that is hard for the fans. Yet I hear there could be some light at the end of the tunnel eventually."

Martins has recently been in Italy for treatment on a niggling groin problem, but insists he will be ready to head back to Tyneside in time for pre-season.

He added: "I have been in Italy for treatment lately.

"There I spoke to a lot of people about Juventus and their demotion to Serie B (in 2006).

"Back then, they still kept very, very good players such as Pavel Nedved, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon. That helped them get promoted, so I can take a lot of solace from that."

Football League clubs have voted to introduce...

At their Annual General Meeting, Football League clubs have voted to introduce new financial regulations relating to tax payments.

Once necessary practical arrangements have been made, any club that falls behind with its employee related payments to HMRC will be subject to a transfer embargo until such time as the debt is cleared.

Clubs have also agreed to give The League written permission to monitor, as appropriate, their tax affairs directly with HMRC, who have welcomed this new arrangement.

Clubs also approved a proposal from Derby County to increase the number of substitutes for Coca-Cola Football League matches to seven (from the current five), of which three may enter the field of play.

MICHAEL OWEN has sent a glossy 34- page brochure about HIMSELF to eight Premier League clubs in a desperate attempt to find a new team for next season.

It is believed to be the first time in Premier League history that a player has produced his own prospectus to prompt a transfer.

The one-time golden boy of English football and former European Footballer of the Year has been reduced to hawking himself around after suffering the ignominy of relegation with Newcastle.

The brochure - circulated by Owen's management company Wasserman Media Group - has been sent to eight top-flight clubs, including Aston Villa, Everton, Portsmouth and West Ham.

In it, WMG boast about the benefits of signing the ex-England striker, his clean-cut image, commercial value and goalscoring prowess and include a medical report.

The brochure rivals any produced by top-end estate agents to advertise multi-million mansions.

Just imagine, folks - For Sale: A magnificent, luxury two-legged footballer, set on a picturesque plot in the North East of England.

Backs on to racecourse (at every opportunity). High maintenance, but must be seen to be appreciated. £80,000 per week, or nearest offer, subject to contract.

But WMG have dropped a brick in trying to allay fears about the 29-year-old's injury-prone record.

US consortium close to Toon takeover?

A CONSORTIUM of American investors is now favourite to buyout Newcastle United, according to city experts.


Mike Ashley put the club up for sale for ￡100m last week and there have rumours of many interested parties, but The Independent today reported a US-based consortium was likely to clinch a deal with the sportswear tycoon to take charge at St James's Park.

It is said that Newcastle have prepared their accounts for due diligence and that the process could be quicker than usual.

The possible sale of the club has also meant that player sales have been placed on hold.

But at the weekend it emerged Michael Owen, a free agent, has had a personal brochure produced to advertise his talents, playing and commercial, by his representatives.

Leeds United to face Newcastle in pre-season

Leeds United have lined up a pre-season clash with Newcastle United.
Leeds will visit St James' Park for Newcastle's only home friendly of the summer on Wednesday, July 29.

Newcastle are licking their wounds after relegation from the Premier League, and the meeting - which could involve ex-Leeds striker Alan Smith - will be the first between the clubs since January 2004.

Hull City are set to rescue Michael Owen's career with a deal to stay in the Premier League.
The News of the World says the ambitious Tigers are ready to offer the fallen former Liverpool striker:

A basic £40,000-a-week deal;

Another £20,000 for every game he plays;

£10,000 for every goal he scores.

Hull bosses are prepared to give the 29-year-old hitman a one-year contract with the option of another 12 months if he plays at least 15 games next season.
