Emmanuel Pogatetz is prepared to remain at Middlesbrough and lead their promotion push next season.

Boro slipped out of the Premier League last season and will start the 2009/10 campaign looking to bounce back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

Reports have suggested that their slide into the Championship will result in a mass exodus from the Riverside Stadium this summer, with the likes of Tuncay Sanli, Jeremie Aliadiere and Afonso Alves all expected to be sold.

However, club captain Pogatetz has vowed to remain loyal to the North East outfit, providing their stay in the Championship lasts no more than one season.

"I'm fully focused on playing another season for Boro," the Austria international said in The Sun.

"I am going to try to help them go back up, and hope to stay at the club longer if they manage it.

"I'll only leave now if something very good comes up. I feel a sense of duty to the club.

"But I can't imagine playing in the Championship for a long time. If it's just for one year then I am ready to help them."

Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands is set for talks about a possible stay at Newcastle.

The 29-year-old joined the Magpies on a six-month deal in the winter transfer window and was not expected to stay with the club following their relegation to the Championship.

The former Rangers star was thought to favour a move to a Premier League club but will now have talks about a possible stay at St James' Park, according to his agent Ivan Marko Benes.

Benes told Sporten.dk: "We have agreed with Newcastle that we will have a talk with them as soon as they know who will be the manager for the next season. For Peter, Newcastle has priority.

"We are waiting for Newcastle, but at the same time we know that Peter doesn't have a contract for the next season so we are looking at other options.

"But things are still not closed with Newcastle."

Lovenkrands moved to Tyneside on a free transfer following a disappointing start to the season with German side Schalke.

He scored three goals in the Magpies' bid to avoid the drop, including in the victories over West Brom and Middlesbrough.

咁走定唔走=.=?

Barton keen to remain in Toon

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is eager to stay with the club following their relegation from the Premier League.

The former Manchester City player was told to stay away from Newcastle's training ground in the wake of their 3-0 defeat at Liverpool late in the season, after he was red-carded.

He was also understood to have been embroiled in a row with manager Alan Shearer in the dressing room afterwards.

But Barton, who has served a jail sentence during his Newcastle career after admitting charges of common assault and affray, wants to stay on Tyneside.

If Shearer takes the job on a permanent basis, however, Barton's spell in the north east could soon be over.

Barton told The Chronicle: "I don't know what is going to happen with the club or with the manager situation.

"I'm just looking forward to going back and my intention is to stay at the club and help Newcastle back into the Premier League.

"If Alan Shearer takes the job and if he doesn't want me then my hands are tied. All I can do is try and get as fit as possible, but I have got to prepare for all eventualities."

Enrique admits Atletico appeal

Newcastle defender Jose Enrique has revealed he would jump at the chance to join Atletico Madrid, but he would also be happy to sign for a Premier League club.

The 23-year-old full-back has three years remaining on his contract at St James' Park, but he has been linked with several clubs following the Magpies' relegation.

Atletico are understood to be considering a move for Enrique as a replacement for Mariano Pernia, who is expected to leave the Vicente Calderon this summer.

And former Valencia and Villarreal player Enrique confesses a return to Spain and the possibility of UEFA Champions League football would appeal.

"They (Atletico) are one of the major teams in the Spanish league. Who would not want to play for a club like that? I think that any player would want to pull on their shirt," he said in Marca.

Big budget
"Atletico are a big club with a big budget and great fans. They also have a great squad and have finished in the Champions League positions for next season.

"I do still have three years left on my contract with Newcastle, but I am pleased and flattered to be linked with them.

"I have watched them quite a few times this season and always follow the Spanish league. They have had a good season with (Diego) Forlan, who I knew at Villarreal."

Enrique has also attracted interest from clubs in England and he would be more than willing to stay because he has adapted to the country.

"If I am honest, I do not have a preference about which country, I am open to anything," he added.

"In Spain people live well and eat well, but I have enjoyed my adventure in England. The Premier League is the best in the world and I would study anything that came up."

EAL INTEREST IN NEWCASTLE SALE

The man working to sell Newcastle United on behalf of Mike Ashley has revealed there is "real and decent interest" in the club from a number of parties, and he is hopeful a deal can be done by July.

Keith Harris, the chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, said there are "two or three" interested parties, and hinted that some of that interest comes from the United Kingdom.

"I'm confident...that there will be offers for Mike to consider in quite short order," Harris told Radio Five Live's Sportsweek.

"There is real and decent interest, this is not necessarily from far flung parts of the globe and those expressing interest when it was first marketed but this is good, gritty interest."

Despite Newcastle's relegation and the huge sums lost on his investment by Ashley, Harris said the Magpies remain an attractive proposition because of the infrastructure and potential at St James' Park.

"It is a huge club," he said. "If you think in attendance terms last year, it exceeded Liverpool, averaging 48,000 and Liverpool a little over 45,000.

"If you walk around the infrastructure, the training ground, the academy, if you're a person who is willing to take a view over the next two to three years, this is a club that belongs in the top seven."

Harris was also involved in previous efforts to sell Liverpool, and said that fans should not be too concerned by reports the club could go out of business while warning that manager Rafa Benitez could be facing a tough transfer window.

Owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett lost 42million last year, mainly through interest payments on the 350million loans taken out when they bought the club.

With a July 24 deadline looming to refinance those loans, Liverpool's accountants this week warned there is "significant doubt" about the parent company's ability to remain as a going concern.

"That is statement is one that is issued as a warning to the shareholders, and I would have thought in this case that the two shareholders are perfectly well aware of the situation at the club," Harris said.

"It's serious but it's a warning to the shareholders."

Rather than go out of business, Harris said Hicks and Gillett are realistically facing three owners: to sell up; find additional funds by selling other assets; or sell players to make up the shortfall.

Harris admitted the last would be "the most dire" as far as fans are concerned, and added: "I think that whatever happens, Rafa Benitez's manoeuvres in the transfer market will be restricted."

好事近?
