Newcastle United have confirmed that midfielder Geremi has joined Turkish side Ankaragucu on an 18-month deal.

The Cameroon international was thought to be close to making the move at the start of January and was paraded in front of Ankaragucu fans but the Magpies rejected the story.

Geremi, though, has now left the Championship title hopefuls after agreeing a one-and-a-half-year contract in Turkey.

The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Middlesbrough man arrived at St James' during the summer of 2007 when then-manager Sam Allardyce recruited him for his experience.

But he has struggled to feature in the plans of current boss Chris Hughton and Newcastle have therefore allowed a high earner on the wage bill to leave.

Newcastle have completed the signing of striker Leon Best from Championship rivals Coventry.

As revealed by skysports.comBest has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at St James' Park after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Coventry decided to sell Best after he refused to accept a new contract on offer at the Ricoh Arena.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton was keen to bring in a new striker before the close of the transfer window after seeing deals for Jermaine Beckford and Marlon Harewood fall through.

Best is expected to go straight into the Newcastle squad for this Friday's game with Cardiff, live on Sky Sports.

Newcastle striker Carroll charged with assault

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll was charged with assault on Monday following an incident at a city centre nightclub.

Carroll, 21, is accused of attacking another reveller inside the Blu Bambu, on Newcastle's Bigg Market, in December. Carroll, of Prestwick, Newcastle, will face magistrates in Newcastle later this month.

After Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League, Carroll has been a regular this season and has scored eight goals in 20 matches for the club this season.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Andrew Carroll, 21, of Prestwick, Newcastle, has today been charged with assault. This follows an incident at Newcastle's Blu Bambu nightclub in the early hours of December 7, 2009. He will appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on February 25."
