Rookie Thabeet recalled from NBA Development Team

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—The Memphis Grizzlies have recalled rookie center Hasheem Thabeet(notes)  from the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Development League after less than two weeks in the minors.

The 7-foot-3 Thabeet was sent to the D-league on Feb. 25. He averaged 13.8 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.17 blocks in six games with Dakota.

Thabeet, the second overall pick last year out of Connecticut, had averaged 2.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 50 games for the Grizzlies.

The 23-year-old is the highest drafted player to play in the NBA’s minor league.

With the Wizards, he started four of six games and had a career-high 19 points Feb. 28 at Fort Wayne and a personal-best 18 rebounds March 5 at Tulsa. The Wizards were 5-1 during his stay.

Dunleavy, Los Angeles Clippers sever ties

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Mike Dunleavy and the Los Angeles Clippers parted company for good Tuesday, barely a month after he relinquished his head coaching duties to focus solely on being general manager.

Mike Dunleavy is no longer general manager of the Clippers.

Now that arrangement is over, with the team announcing his departure in an e-mailed statement. Assistant general manager Neil Olshey will take over Dunleavy’s job.

Rafer Alston is content with his decision to leave the Miami Heat, because it wasn't about losing his starting job. It was about being told he was no longer going to play and deciding that looking after a twin sister who tried to take her life just a few days earlier was more important.

"The way I handled it was wrong," Alston said Tuesday in his first public comments since leaving the team last Friday. "I didn't really tell [team officials] why I was leaving."

He said he texted team officials that he was going to Texas to be with his family rather than call or meet face to face out of fear his emotions would get the better of him. He was already coping with his twin sister Racine's attempted suicide when coach Erik Spoelstra pulled him aside and said he was being dropped not only from the starting lineup but also from playing altogether.
