Birmingham to make substantial changes in summer

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is set to reshape his squad in the summer with "significant" additions and "eight or nine players likely to leave".

McLeish only managed to bring in playmaker Michel from Sporting Gijon and midfielder Craig Gardner from Aston Villa during the January transfer window.

But the club's chief executive, Michael Dunford, expects McLeish to be busy with ins and outs from St Andrew's when the window reopens in four months' time.

"I expect it to be quite a busy summer," he said. "We will gear ourselves up for what I'm sure will be significant transfer movement in the summer.

"There are also eight or nine players likely to be leaving the club, which means, from a numerical point of view, we need new players of quality to supplement the ones we have got as well."

McLeish has already allowed central defender Martin Taylor and former skipper Damien Johnson to leave on free transfers to Watford and Plymouth respectively while wide player Gary McSheffrey has joined Leeds on loan.

Several players are out of contract in the summer, including current first-teamer regulars Liam Ridgewell and Sebastian Larsson plus Lee Carsley, Garry O'Connor, Stuart Parnaby, Franck Queudrue, Maik Taylor and Gregory Vignal.

McLeish has indicated he would like to keep some of those players and the Blues have options that mean they can extend the deals of several of them should they so desire.

United remove Hargreaves from Champions League squad

Manchester United have removed midfielder Owen Hargreaves from their squad for the Champions League knockout stages.

Hargreaves has not featured for United since September 2008 due to a long-standing problem with his knees. He has undergone rehabilitation work and has recently returned to light training.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who had said in September that he was nearing a return, said this week that he hoped Hargreaves would be fit in time to face AC Milan this month, but it appears his recovery has since suffered another setback after UEFA confirmed United have requested that Ritchie De Laet be introduced into their squad in Hargreaves' place.

Hargreaves moved to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich for £19 million in May 2007.

Benitez believes in Babel

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez believes Ryan Babel can shine at Anfield now the transfer window is closed.

Babel's future at Liverpool was the subject of intense speculation during the January transfer window with Birmingham City having bids rejected for the Dutchman.

Benitez believes Babel's form was affected by the speculation and he now feels the former Ajax man can show his true ability for the rest of the campaign.

"If we play without the speculation surrounding Ryan Babel then I am sure it will be easier for him to focus and for me to play him," said Benitez.

"So I think we will be better in attack and the team will be better."

Benitez also revealed that Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson are not expected to return to action until March at the earliest.

"Glen is still progressing," added Benitez. "It's looking like he will be back in another three or four weeks. When he was first ruled out, it looked like he would be out for two months and it has been a month so far.

"Fernando is progressing too. Hopefully he will be back in the same time, while Yossi [Benayoun] could return in two weeks."

STATEMENT ON KAKUTA DECISION
Posted on: Thu 04 Feb 2010

Chelsea Football Club has been cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the transfer of Gael Kakuta and has had all sanctions lifted.

Today's announcement from the Court of Arbitration for Sport can be read below.

Chairman of Chelsea FC Bruce Buck said: 'We are pleased to have come to an amicable resolution of the matter and that it has been ratified by CAS and recognised by FIFA.

'It was always our intention to work together with Lens to reach this end, and both clubs have strengthened their relationship as a result of resolving this case to everyone's satisfaction.

'In an act of good faith and with a view to the possibility of future collaboration with Lens, and without recognising any liability, Chelsea has agreed to pay compensation costs for the training given to the player while at Lens, as mandated by FIFA in its original ruling.'

Chelsea FC chief executive Ron Gourlay added: 'Naturally, we are pleased Chelsea has been cleared of any wrongdoing and that the matter is now closed.'

The Court of Arbitration for Sport statement reads:

Lausanne, 4 February 2010 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued an award today ratifying the agreement reached by Chelsea FC, Racing Club de Lens and the French football player Gaël Kakuta, putting an end to this arbitration procedure which also involved FIFA. The CAS has noted that, in the agreement, the two clubs and the player have recognised that the contract between the player and RC Lens was not valid. Accordingly, the player could not have terminated it prematurely and without just cause and FC Chelsea cannot therefore be liable for inducing a breach of contract. As a consequence, in light of these new circumstances, the sanctions imposed upon Chelsea FC and the player by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber had to be lifted.

In accordance with the parties' request, the entire proceedings, including the arbitral award and the agreement shall remain confidential and the CAS will not comment on this matter any further.

On 25 September 2009, the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber imposed, inter alia, a restriction of four months' ineligibility on Mr Gaël Kakuta, and Chelsea FC was banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two complete, consecutive registration periods following the FIFA decision. The sanctions were stayed by the CAS until the award was issued.

Blues' transfer ban lifted
CAS clears Chelsea over Kakuta saga

Last updated: 4th February 2010

Chelsea have been cleared of any wrongdoing over the Gael Kakuta affair and are no longer banned from signing players.

The Blues were hit with an 18-month transfer embargo in September after Fifa ruled that they were guilty of inducing Kakuta, then 16, to break a contract with Lens back in 2007.

Chelsea appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and it was decided that the ban would be suspended, allowing the club to bolster their squad in January.

CAS have now ruled that Chelsea did not break any rules over the signing of Kakuta and the embargo has been lifted entirely.

A statement from CAS read: "The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued an award today ratifying the agreement reached by Chelsea FC, Racing Club de Lens and the French football player Gaël Kakuta, putting an end to this arbitration procedure which also involved FIFA.

"The CAS has noted that, in the agreement, the two clubs and the player have recognised that the contract between the player and RC Lens was not valid.

"Accordingly, the player could not have terminated it prematurely and without just cause and FC Chelsea cannot therefore be liable for inducing a breach of contract.

"As a consequence, in light of these new circumstances, the sanctions imposed upon Chelsea FC and the player by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber had to be lifted."
Chelsea delight

If CAS had decided that Chelsea were guilty of inducing Kakuta they would not have been able to bring in players for the next two transfer windows.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti nevertheless insisted he was happy with the squad available to him and opted not to sign anyone before Monday's deadline.

He will be delighted to have the option to sign players when the window reopens in the summer and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has explained that he was always confident the dispute would be resolved in such a way.

"We are pleased to have come to an amicable resolution of the matter and that it has been ratified by CAS and recognised by FIFA," Buck told the club's official website.

"It was always our intention to work together with Lens to reach this end, and both clubs have strengthened their relationship as a result of resolving this case to everyone's satisfaction.

"In an act of good faith and with a view to the possibility of future collaboration with Lens, and without recognising any liability, Chelsea has agreed to pay compensation costs for the training given to the player while at Lens, as mandated by FIFA in its original ruling."

Chelsea FC chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "Naturally, we are pleased Chelsea has been cleared of any wrongdoing and that the matter is now closed."
