Dan Gosling rocks Everton as error allows England Under 21 star to quit on a free transfer
Everton bosses are bitterly disappointed with Dan Gosling after he rejected a pay deal worth around £15,000 a week and walked out of Goodison Park as a free agent.
The England Under 21 midfielder is expected to join Barclays Premier League newcomers Newcastle after apparently changing his mind over an offer of improved terms and stunning Everton by telling them he wanted to leave.
Signed from Plymouth two-and-a-half years ago, Gosling would virtually have doubled his money under the terms of his new two-year contract and is believed to have indicated to Everton that he was ready to accept it.
But, aware of interest from Newcastle and evidently feeling he was worthy of more starting appearances than he was granted last season, he left Goodison chiefs shocked and angry by turning it down and ending his Everton career.
Everton will lose out on compensation that could have been as much as £4million, because they did not put their offer in writing, but strongly deny they have been guilty of an administrative blunder. They insist similar deals in the past, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Jack Rodwell, have been based on mutual trust and that a similar gentleman's agreement existed with Gosling.
The feeling within Everton is that a written offer should not have been necessary, given an expression of intent from Gosling to stay put, and that it would have done nothing to prevent him quitting, once he changed his mind.
Players under 20 cannot sign five-year deals, which is the length of contract Everton wanted to offer him on his arrival at Goodison Park, but the initial three-year agreement came with a verbal undertaking to extend it by two years, on substantially improved terms. With bonuses, he could have taken his earnings beyond £15,000 a week next season.
Everton insist it suited both parties and feel badly let down, as well as bemused by Gosling's stance that he not only merits a regular starting place but should be selected in his favoured central midfield berth.
Though Newcastle are ready to offer him a fresh start, he will be out out action for at least another four months, due to a knee injury. |
