Manchester United manager David Moyes is unwilling to give up his interest in Everton's Leighton Baines, making an improved offer of £16 million for his former player, the Daily Star writes. United had a £12 million offer for Baines rejected last month, with Everton keen to keep their star player at Goodison Park next season.

But the increased offer could persuade the Toffees to cash in on the England international, one of Moyes' key targets. Everton have offered Baines £70,000-a-week to remain at the club, with chairman Bill Kenwright apparently angered by Moyes' persistence.

The moves for Villa and Benteke place doubts over the future of Emmanuel Adebayor, Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe, but Belgium international Benteke could quickly become Andre Villas-Boas's number one target if a bid for Villa falls through.

Joey Barton is demanding a staggering £3m to leave QPR after he finally arrived for pre-season training on Wednesday.

Barton has told Rangers he will walk away from his £70,000-a-week contract if they agree to his demands.

The midfielder, 30, still has two years left to run on his contract and it will cost the Championship club £7m to keep him.

Barton claims Marseille have offered him £30,000 a week to return to the south of France following a season long loan at the Ligue 1 club.

Rangers chief Harry Redknapp expected Barton to report for training at Rangers on Monday but the midfielder didn’t show up.

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are leading the race for Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu, according to El Mundo Deportivo.

The 19-year-old, considered one of Barca B’s most precocious talents, is keen to continue his progression in England and is looking increasingly likely to spend next season on loan.

Barca are unwilling to sanction a permanent transfer but are keen for Deulofeu, who is currently with the Spain squad at the Under-20 World Cup, to gain first-team experience. With Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Martinez both admirers of the Barcelona brand of football, Mundo Deportivo believes Spurs and Everton are the frontrunners for his signature.

Deulofeu’s agent, Gines Carvajal, has been in England this week finalising the transfer of another former Barca youth-teamer, Marc Muniesa, to Stoke City, and it is reported he may have held meetings with other Premier League clubs to discuss Deulofeu during his visit.

The winger made 33 appearances for Barca B in the second tier last season and scored 18 goals.

More on Kone – Dave Whelan said three clubs had made offers for him, and it would seem that one of those is Newcastle. The Magpies have been given permission to speak to the Wigan striker, the Press Association is reporting.

Besiktas director Ahmet Piper says the Turkish club have made a bid for Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Adebayor scored five goals in 25 appearances last season – but Piper told Fanatik a deal was a long way from being done.

"It is certainly true that we are looking at the idea of a transfer. We have made a serious bid for Adebayor,” he said. "That, in turn, has given us a figure for the player, which is slightly above the amount that we imagined. However, making a signing as big as this immediately is nothing but a dream.”
