Olsen commits to Denmark cause

The Denmark coach Morten Olsen has signed a four-year contract extension which will run until 30 June 2010.

'Exciting job'
Speaking at Danish Football Association (DBU) headquarters in Copenhagen today, Olsen said: "I have been giving my future lots of consideration. This is an extremely exciting job, but the way I see it is that this may be my last job as a coach, and therefore it was particularly important for me to make sure that I made the right choice."

World Cup failure
Olsen was appointed in 2000 and guided Denmark to the second round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2004™, although they failed to advance from a testing qualifying pool for Germany next year. A number of Danish football experts felt Olsen, 56, would subsequently return to club management, but the DBU was keen to retain the services of "the most competent national coach we could imagine".

'Energy and experience'
Jim Stjerne Hansen, general secretary of the DBU, added: "Morten was wanted by some of the greatest clubs and national teams in Europe, and therefore we are happy to have been able to offer him terms which mean he has chosen to continue to invest his energy and experience in our national team as well as developing our younger talents."

New coach
The DBU also announced at the conference that Olsen's assistant, Keld Bordinggaard, will take charge of the Under-21s when Flemming Serritslev steps down after the 2006 UEFA European U21 Championship.

Thorvaldsson hurt for Halmstad
Tuesday, 22 November 2005

Halmstads BK have suffered a major blow before their meeting with UC Sampdoria with the news that Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson is out for six weeks with a shin injury.

Persistent pain
The 23-year-old Icelandic international was hurt in training on Saturday, with the Swedish club preparing for the Thursday visit of their Group C rivals at a camp in Turkey. Halmstad coach Janne Andersson said: "When we got back, he had an X-ray because the pain wouldn’t go away, and it revealed a fracture."

'Positive note'
Thorvaldsson is a key man for Halmstad, having scored 16 goals in the 2005 Allsvenskan. "Of course it's a huge blow for the team as well," said Andersson. "On a positive note, it didn't happen during the [domestic] season and he'll only miss two games.” Halmstad have lost their first two group-stage matches while Sampdoria took a point from their only fixture to date.

Duo crown Royal League recoveries

Vålerenga IF and IFK Göteborg both bounced back from opening-day defeats with victory in the second round of matches in the Scandinavian Royal League. Elsewhere there was more frustration for Lillestrøm SK, who were held to a second successive goalless draw.

Hoseth double
Norwegian champions Vålerenga, who were swept aside 4-0 at FC Midtjylland on Thursday, returned to form with a 3-1 success against IK Start in Olso. Two first-half goals from Magne Hoseth and another from Freddy Dos Santos settled the match between the sides that occupied the top two places at the end of the Tippeligaen season. Start hit a late consolation goal through Kjetil Pedersen but it proved too little, too late, as they were consigned to their second defeat in two games. Midtjylland, Vålerenga and Hammarby IF all lie at the top of the standings with three points.

Göteborg revenge
Last year's losing finalists Göteborg also showed resolve as they defeated Djurgårdens IF 1-0 away from home in Group 3. The result, which was particularly sweet for Göteborg against the team that denied them the Allvenskan title in October, was sealed thanks to a solitary goal from Stefan Selakovic on 59 minutes. Göteborg, Djurgården and SFK Lyn Olso all now have three points, with the other team in the group, Aalborg BK, still point-less. However, both Swedish teams have played one more game.

Lillestrøm stalemate
Meanwhile, in Group 2 Lillestrøm drew 0-0 for the second time in four days, this time at home to Kalmar FF. The result meant that all three fixtures so far played in the section have been drawn, with Kalmar and Lillestrøm on top with two points, one ahead of Danish sides Brøndby IF and FC København. Afterwards, Lillestrøm coach Uwe Rösler said: "There was only one team on the pitch today and I'm very pleased with our perfomace. We dominated and had a lot of chances but it wasn't our day".

Two-week break
The competition now takes a two-week break before the next round of matches on 8 December.

STOCKHOLM, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Around 100 Djurgarden and IFK Gothenburg fans were involved in a fight in Stockholm on Saturday, the daily Aftonbladet reported on its website.

Police intervened at Medborgarplatsen in the south of the Swedish capital, arresting one person after a clash they said had probably been planned.


'We got several calls saying there were full-blown fights with fists and stones,' police told Aftonbladet. 'It was over in two minutes and everything is okay now.'

Nobody was injured during the clashes, the police said.

Swedish champions Djurgarden and IFK Gothenburg meet in the Nordic Royal League on Sunday.

Allianssi wants Chinese taken away

HELSINKI, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Finnish first division club AC Allianssi wants to break all ties with its main owner Zheyun Ye, who took control of the club shortly before it became embroiled in a betting scandal, Allianssi's chairman said on Tuesday.

Jarmo Hakala said Allianssi ry, a separate organisation which leases the league licence to Ye's company Allianssi Oy, would sue Ye for damages, telling Reuters in a telephone interview that he had not fulfilled the terms of the agreement.


Ye, whose holding in Allianssi was bought on his behalf in June by Belgian Olivier Suray, could not be immediately reached for a comment, nor could Suray.

'We have decided to break our deal with the Belgian/Chinese connection, Mr Ye and Mr Suray, because according to our agreement they should have paid all debts we had in June, and they haven't followed the rules of that agreement,' Hakala said.

Allianssi Vantaa were fined 10,000 euros ($11,810) in August for insufficient preparations before an 8-0 loss to Haka Valkeakoski on July 7.

The game had attracted far heavier betting than usual but a disciplinary committee said there was no evidence that the match was fixed. The Finnish league handed the case over to the police but Hakala had no information about the investigation.

'I only know what I've seen on television,' he said.

Ye, a 40-year-old Chinese national, was arrested on Nov. 2 in Brussels, in an investigation over alleged match-fixing in Belgium, where two first division clubs have launched investigations into recent games.

Local Belgian media reported Ye had bought a stake in Lierse, which succumbed to a 4-0 drubbing by fellow bottom club Germinal Beerschot, and police were investigating an unusually high amount of betting overseas on a games involving St Truiden.
