The Allsvenskan season is over, so all but a handful of Swedish sides involved in European competition or the Scandinavian Royal League have gone into hibernation.

Djurgården expectant
Halmstads BK are soon to start their winter break, as they have no chance of progressing any further in the UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, double-winners Djurgårdens IF insist they are preparing for European action in 2006/07 after kicking off their Royal League campaign with a win and a defeat.

Winter signings
Coach Kjell Jonevret, who has strengthened his defence with the signings of Robert Stoltz from Kalmar FF and Stefan Batan from Assyriska Föreningen, said: "We want to do well in Europe next season, and Royal League games give us an opportunity to try tactical solutions against strong teams."

Batan controversy
The acquisition of Batan has caused controversy with AIK Solna claiming the player had already signed for them. The affair is likely to be settled by a legal case, but that has not helped to appease AIK who have seen several other targets move elsewhere.

AIK targets
First, Canadian international Ali Gerba left GIF Sundsvall for IFK Göteborg, then Stefan Ishizaki opted to join IF Elfsborg rather than return to his old club. However, at least one transfer - that of GAIS Göteborg's Wilton Figueirido - looks likely to happen. "There are only minor issues to iron out," said GAIS chairman Christer Wallin.

Uwe Rösler (born November 15), 1968 is a German footballer - born in Attenburg East-Germany. He has played for several clubs, most notably Manchester City, where he was the leading goalscorer for three consecutive seasons from 1995-97, and Kaiserslauten, where he played in the UEFA Champions League. Rösler signed with Norwegian club Lillestrøm S.K. in the summer of 2002, and became the leading goal-scorer for the club.

After only the first match of the season in 2003, in which he was the matchwinner in a 1-0 win over Bodø/Glimt, Rösler was diagnosed with cancer and had to put an end to his playing career. Luckily, with the support from his wife Cecilie, family and friends and his extreme fighting-spirit, Uwe Rösler won the most important match of his life, and has now recovered fully from the disease.

Rösler is now the manager of Lillestrøm S.K. in the Norwegian Premier League.

IFK hero Mild gets his due

After 18 years and 459 matches, Håkan Mild played his last game for IFK Göteborg yesterday as his side lost 3-1 to SFK Lyn Oslo in the Royal League.

Jubilant chorus
IFK fans sang Mild's name for all 90 minutes of the match and the player was close to tears at full time as he spoke to reporters about his final game for the club. "It was great," he said. "It was a fantastic feeling and one that I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

Irreplaceable talent
Meanwhile, IFK coach Arne Erlandsen paid tribute to the 34-year-old midfielder, saying: "I would love to see Håkan play for another year. His leadership qualities and his passion for the game and the club are unique, and it's not something you can replace on a whim. Mild is a true IFK player."

Long service
Mild made his debut as a 16-year-old in a friendly game against IF Elfsborg back in 1988 and has since become an icon for the Swedish club. His passion and work ethic have seen him being regarded by many supporters as one of the greatest players in the club's history.

Club legend
"I don't know about that," said Mild, who spent brief spells away from the club with Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Wimbledon FC, in response to such acclaim. "There have been a lot of good players playing for the club but of course I'm proud that people appreciate what I've done."

Swedish veteran
Up until Saturday, Mild was one of only three members of Sweden's 1994 FIFA World Cup squad still playing professional football, the others being FC Barcelona's Henrik Larsson and Teddy Lucic of BK Häcken. In total, Mild won 74 caps.

New role
Mild will now become IFK's director of sport. "It's all new to me but that's like everything in life," he said. "But everything has a beginning and an end."

Sweden coach Lars Lagerbäck has given three defensive players hope of appearing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup after including them in an experimental squad to play two games in Asia next month.

Concha hope
IFK Göteborg's Karl Svensson, Andreas Granqvist of Helsingborgs IF and Mattias Concha of Djurgårdens IF are selected in a 20-man party to take on Saudi Arabia on 18 January and as-yet-unnamed opponents six days later. Svensson and Granqvist have both represented the Under-21s, while Concha has never featured for Sweden at any level. "My first year at Djurgården [in 2004] was tough but I've matured a lot this year and this is a real bonus," said Concha, 24.

England test
All the players involved play in Scandinavia, with five coming from Denmark and three from Norway in addition to the Sweden-based contingent. "It's really important for these players to play these games," Lagerbäck said. "When you play international football you get a better idea of the areas of your game you need to improve." Sweden were paired with England, Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago in World Cup Group B.
