Steven Gerrard can expect to receive £160,000-a-week in his hand if he turns his back on Chelsea and opts to sign for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Chelsea have started the bidding at £32million (£35million in total depending on achievements) while Real are reporedly prepared to pay up to £35million. Chelsea can easily beat off any bid made by Real Madrid but they will struggle to meet any personal terms offered by Real because it would have a knock-on effect throughout the current Chelsea squad - in other words, numerous players at Chelsea would then be entitled to have their wages raised to match Gerrard's.
Gerrard has received an offer of £100,000-a-week by Liverpool which sees him receive a rise of £20,000-a-week. But there are suggestions that Liverpool cannot afford to break the bank on Gerrard because of the state of the club's finances. Although the Reds enjoyed a successful season in financial terms, they still failed to bring in investment and it is claimed that this is why the club are seriously considering taking the money.
A fee of £35 million is very tempting for the Reds and if Chelsea take on Real, that could increase to £40million. It is reported today that Chelsea were initially going to make an £18million bid and only bid £32million when Real Madrid's interest became official.
Gerrard is considering Liverpool's latest contract offer that was made yesterday.
Liverpool FC today issued the following press statement regarding Steven Gerrard.
"The club has made it crystal clear we want to keep Steven at Anfield. Sadly, he has told us this afternoon that he will not accept our offer of an improved and extended contract because he wants to leave Liverpool. We very much regret the decision he has taken
