Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be in line for a surprise return to first-team action in time for the Premiership opener against Everton on August 13.
The ever-popular Norwegian hit-man has not played for Sir Alex Ferguson's side since the 2004 FA Cup final victory over Millwall after struggling with a serious knee injury.
However, after undergoing surgery in Scandinavia, the 32-year-old may now be in contention for the start of United's campaign to regain the Premiership crown that they have won eight times, but not in the last two years.
After returning to training, Solskjaer is now ready to don the United shirt well before his scheduled return date of October.
"Ole just felt his knee again recently, but it was a different part and the swelling has now gone down," said Ferguson.
"He is now back in training and, you never know, could be fit for the start of the season."
His early return to fitness could put paid to United's pursuit of Michael Owen, as a fit-again Solskjaer, along with Alan Smith, Louis Saha, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney, would leave Ferguson with five strikers at his disposal.
