KINGS ACQUIRE RON ARTEST FOR PEJA STOJAKOVIC
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – The Sacramento Kings today acquired the services of Ron Artest in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Peja Stojakovic, it was announced this afternoon by Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
“Peja’s just been a great, great player here,” Petrie said. “We’ve seen him develop from a rookie into a three-time All-Star. He’s been a total professional. We certainly wish him the very best with Indiana. He’ll always be a favorite member of the Kings organization.”
“Ron Artest is going to bring a dimension to this team that we haven’t had in a long time, maybe since I’ve been in Sacramento, in terms of his defensive abilities, his presence on the court, his versatility, his size and strength,” Petrie said. “Given where we are at this point of the season, we think he’ll come in here and really make an impact.”
Artest, a 6-7, 260-pound forward, in his 7th NBA season, is averaging 19.4 points (.460 FG%, .333 3pt%, .612 FT%), 4.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.63 steals per game in starting 16 games for the Indiana Pacers in 2005-06. The 2003-04 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Artest has been named to the league’s All-Defensive team twice in his career, 2003 (third team) and 2004 (first team). Named to the 2004 Eastern Conference All-Star Team, Artest posted career-highs in points (18.3) and rebounds (5.3 rpg). His 2.08 steals per game average led the Pacers and was third-highest in the league in 2003-04. Originally drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round (16th pick overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft, Artest was traded to the Pacers with current Kings teammate Brad Miller, Ron Mercer, and Kevin Ollie for Jalen Rose, Travis Best, Norman Richardson, and a conditional second-round draft choice on February 19, 2002.
One of the most productive players in Kings history, Stojakovic posted career averages of 18.3 ppg (.461 FG%, .398 3pt%, .893 FT%), 5.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.05 spg, and 34.2 mpg since joining the Kings prior to the 1998 campaign after being selected with the 14th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He departs having played 518 career games as a King, the most by any player in the Sacramento-era (1985-present). His name also appears among the club’s all-time leaders in several other categories, including first in franchise history in career free throw percentage (.893), three-pointers made (1,070) and attempted (2,687), and second during the Sac-era in points scored (9,498) and free throws made (1,724).
Stojakovic was named an NBA All-Star three times in his seven-and-a-half seasons in Sacramento, becoming the first player since Mark Price in 1993 and 1994 to win back-to-back 1 800 CALL ATT Shootouts (2002 & 2003). Stojakovic was named NBA Player of the Month in November 2003 and NBA Player of the Week on two occasions. He was voted to the All-NBA Second-Team following his finest statistical campaign in 2002-03 in which he averaged a career-high 24.2 ppg (.480 FG%, .433 3pt%, .927 FT%), a career-high 6.3 rpg, 2.1 apg, and 1.33 spg. His contributions helped the Kings reach the NBA Playoffs in each of his seven-plus years in Sacramento after the club advanced to the postseason only once during the Sacramento-era prior to his arrival. In addition to his on-court influence, Stojakovic made indelible contributions in the Sacramento community and beyond, including the founding of the Stojakovic Children’s Foundation in 2003.
