AEK To Land Sam Dalla Bona
Greek side AEK look set to sign Italian midfielder Sam Dalla Bona.
The Athens club will probably find SPL outfit Hearts in their way as they attempt to reach the group stage of the Champions League. AEK will meet the winners of the Hearts-Siroki Brijeg second qualifying round tie, which the Scottish side lead 3-0 from the first leg.
But to make an impact in Europe’s top-flight club tournament, AEK have to strengthen their squad with the addition of an experienced player.
The 25-year-old AC Milan player, who is not considered part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for next season, was regarded as one of the biggest Italian talents, but as he failed to find first-team football opportunities he was forced to spend years on loan at Bologna, Lecce and Sampdoria.
Now he is ready to sign a 3-year long deal with the Super League club.
Sam Dalla Bona started his career at Chelsea when he was signed as a highly promising 17 year-old by the London outfit from Atalanta's youth side in October 1998. He won promptly the club's golden boot in 1998/99, scoring 18 goals in six months, and made his debut in the Champions League a year later against Feyenoord.
When Chelsea midfielders Dennis Wise and Gustavo Poyet left the club in 2001, Dalla Bona - after some impressive performances - got an extended run in the side, making 32 appearances in that season and scoring 2 goals. The following season, however, he refused to sign a contract extension and was placed on the transfer list.
He moved to Milan but competition with Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo prevented him from getting the opportunities he needed to prove himself and as a result his career started to wane almost at its beginning. AEK could be a new starting point.
