Seven countries get Olympic byes  


Nigeria and Cameroon have been given byes into the second round of qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic football tournament.
Both countries, winners of the 1996 and 2000 tournaments, are among the seven countries that will not play in the first round.

Angola, Mali, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia have also been given passage to the second round.

The opening leg of the first round of qualifiers, which has 34 countries, will be played between 1-3 September.

Preliminary round draw for Beijing Olympic Games held

KUALA LUMPUR: The preliminary round draw for the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 men’s football tournament was held today at the AFC House.


The draw saw the 20 lowest ranked teams from the 2004 Athens Games coming out from a single pot (open draw).


The pairings are: Myanmar vs India, Jordan vs Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan vs Thailand, Vietnam vs Afghanistan, Uzbekistan vs Tajikistan, Singapore vs Pakistan, Hong Kong vs Bangladesh, Yemen vs Palestine, Indonesia vs Maldives and Australia vs Chinese Taipei.


The teams will play the first leg on February 7, 2007, and the second leg will be played on February 14, 2007.


Meanwhile, the top 14 seeded teams qualify directly for the second round for which the draw will be held on September 16, 2006, in Singapore. China have automatic qualification to the tournament proper as hosts.

（吉隆坡）2008年北京奧運會亞洲區足球預選賽首輪對陣抽籤儀式今天在亞足聯總部舉行，來自於亞洲排名最後的20個國家參加了今天的抽籤儀式。


按照亞足聯的賽事安排，首回合的淘汰賽將在2007年2月7日進行，而第二輪的比賽將在2007年2月14日進行，2回合的勝者將晉級第二回合的比賽。


具體對陣形式如下：緬甸V印度、約旦V吉爾吉斯坦、土庫曼斯坦V泰國、越南V阿富汗、烏茲別克斯坦V塔吉克斯坦、新加坡V巴基斯坦、中國香港V孟加拉、也門V巴勒斯坦、印度尼西亞V馬爾代夫、澳大利亞V中國台北。


同時，亞洲前14名的種子隊將直接晉級第二輪的比賽，抽籤儀式將於2006年9月16日在新加坡舉行，這14個國家為伊拉克、韓國、日本、巴林、伊朗、阿曼、科威特、阿聯酋、沙特、黎巴嫩、馬來西亞、朝鮮、敘利亞、卡塔爾。

SINGAPORE: Top seed Iraq have been bracketed with East Asian powerhouse DPR Korea and the winners of the preliminary round matches between Turkmenistan-Thailand and Myanmar-India in Group E after the keenly awaited draw for the Asian qualifying (second) round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics was held here on Saturday.


The qualifying format sees the 20 lowest ranked teams having to clear the preliminary round hurdle before joining the top 14 seeds, who are exempt from the preliminary round, in the second round qualifying.


The 24-team second round qualifying, which has been split into six groups of four each, runs through February 28 to June 6, 2007, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the Final round which will be played in three groups of four teams each.


The Final home-and-away round will be held from August 22 till November 21, 2007, with the three group winners representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games. China have automatic qualification as hosts.


Second seed Korea Republic found themselves in the tricky Group F with UAE and the winners of the preliminary round encounters between Central Asian teams Uzbekistan-Tajikistan and the West Asian pairing of Yemen-Palestine.


Group D turned out to be the toughest of the six with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Kyrgyzstan, Australia or Chinese Taipei in contention for the top two places.


Japan had the easiest draw on paper after being slotted alongside Malaysia, Syria, Hong Kong-Bangladesh in Group B, while Group A was packed with three West Asian teams Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, with Singapore or Pakistan coming through the preliminary round to join them.


Oman, Lebanon, Vietnam-Afghanistan, Indonesia-Maldives will fight it out in Group C.


The identity of the preliminary round winners will be clear after the two-legged knockout stage on February 7 and February 14, 2007.

（新加坡）2008年北京奧運會亞洲區預選賽的第二輪抽籤儀式於週六在新加坡舉行，24支隊伍被分進了6個小組進行逐個廝殺，而每個小組的前2名將晉級最後一輪的小組淘汰賽，屆時出線的12個國家將再次被分為3組，進行主客場的比賽，而每個小組的冠軍將同中國一起代表亞洲參加2008年北京奧運會男子足球的比賽。


由24支隊伍參加的第二輪分組賽將於2007年2月28日至8月6日進行，而最後一輪由12個國家參加的主客場比賽將於2007年8月22日至11月21日進行。

Zambia lead Africa's Olympic charge

A week that started in disappointment ended in triumph for the promising Zambian player Given Singulama as he ensured a major boost for his international profile.
Singuluma had been one of a handful of players dropped from Zambia's national squad ahead of the vital CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa, with the axe falling despite the fact he had scored in the Zambians' semi-final triumph over Botswana at the Cosafa Castle Cup in August.

Nevertheless, instead of heading home, Singuluma accepted the invitation to transfer immediately to the Zambian Olympic side, who, like their senior counterparts, had an important home fixture to fulfil at the weekend. In the case of the U-23 team, it was a one-off Olympic Football Tournament qualification match against Djibouti, who had waived their right to a home leg due to the lack of an appropriate stadium in which to host the match.

Singuluma certainly thrived at Lusaka's Nkhoma stadium, firing home a hat-trick as Zambia racked up double figures in a 10-0 win that secures a place in the second round of African qualifiers for Beijing 2008 alongside the likes of Egypt, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Africa.

Africa has three places at the tournament in China and will decide its final representatives after an exhaustive group stage, with these early preliminary rounds aimed at narrowing down the field.

Elsewhere, Egypt brought back several of their young European-based stars for the second leg of their tie against the Gambia in Alexandria after drawing the first leg. Greek-based Ahmed Magdi scored and there was a solid contribution from Genclerbirligi's Sumgayit Ghanem, although Gambia's cause was not helped by the 28th-minute dismissal of Osman Koly for a dangerous tackle.

Preparations pay off for South Africa
South Africa, who famously defeated Brazil at the Sydney Olympics six years ago, have invested time, effort and money in their efforts to qualify for the Beijing Games, with their extensive preparations including warm-up matches in north and west Africa and a trip to Indonesia. These efforts are considered all the more important as many the country's Olympic hopefuls are seen as candidates for the senior side at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, which the country will of course be hosting.

However, the South Africans had to battle to scrape past neighbours Namibia in the second leg of their first round tie on Sunday. South Africa's U-23 side, nicknamed Amagluglug, held a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg and were expecting a tough tussle with the Namibians, who equalised the aggregate score through Rudi Louw just after half-time. It was, though, a lead that lasted just three minutes before striker Lerato Chabangu scored to ensure South Africa's progress by a narrowest of aggregate scorelines.

Rwanda, meanwhile, came storming back from a 1-2 first leg deficit to beat Sierra Leone 3-0 in Kigali and take their place in the second round. The Rwandans were two goals ahead inside the opening half-hour, with Eric Yirinkwandi and Aphrodise Hategkimana both scoring, and the victory was completed 15 minutes into the second half with a goal by Jean Claude Muhimana.

As for Mozambique, they needed penalties to overcome Libya after a 1-1 aggregate draw, triumphing 5-3 on spot-kicks after losing the second leg 1-0.

Hosts and holders the Netherlands will take on Israel, Portugal and Belgium at the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals following today's draw in Arnhem.

Competitive pools
The Jong Oranje, the only seeded nation and winners of last season's tournament in Portugal, were pitted against first-time qualifiers Israel as well as perennial challengers Portugal and their neighbours Belgium in Group A. The Group B lineup brings together the Czech Republic, England, Serbia and Italy in a tough-looking section. The draw was conducted by former Netherlands captain Frank de Boer and AFC Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar in tandem with UEFA professional football director Giorgio Marchetti.

Schedule
The action begins on Sunday 10 June, with all eight teams playing each of the other three sides in their section. The top two in each group will advance to the semi-finals, scheduled to take place in Heerenveen and Arnhem on Wednesday 20 June. Should a play-off be needed to decide the fourth qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing - in the event of England reaching the semis - it will be staged the following day in Nijmegen. The tournament then concludes at the 20,000-capacity Euroborg Stadion in Groningen on Saturday 23 June.

Olympic qualifiers: Jordan through to second round

KUALA LUMPUR: Jordan have automatically qualified for the second round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic men’s football tournament without a ball being kicked after the pull-out of first round opponents Kyrgyzstan.


Jordan were scheduled to play Kyrgyzstan over two legs on February 7 and 14, 2007.


The withdrawal of Kyrgyzstan and Jordan’s progress has left the number of teams in the first round of qualifying at 18 who will engage in home-and-away knockout games, with the winners advancing to the second round.


Asia has four spots in the Beijing Olympics, including that of hosts China.
