Pakistan fight back to stun Singapore; India, Australia, Uzbekistan through

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistan caused the biggest upset in the preliminary qualifying round for the Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 when they shocked nine-man Singapore 3-2 in the second leg for an aggregate 5-3 victory on Wednesday at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore.
Pakistan now join Asian Games gold medallists Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait in the second round in Group A.
Pakistan, needing just a draw to enter the next phase after winning the first leg 2-1, were trailing by two goals when Khairul Amri (31 and 39) scored for the visitors.
Singapore were reduced to 10 men when their midfielder Hariss Harun was given his marching orders a minute before the interval by Qatari referee Abdulrehman Abdou and their woes were further compounded when Yusisikander Yusap scored an own goal, helping the hosts reduce the deficit in the 65th minute. Pakistani substitute Farooq Shah, who scored in the first leg too, restored parity in the 76th minute.
Singapore had to play the last six minutes with nine men after midfielder Zulfadli Zainal was sent off for a reckless tackle on Abdul Aziz and this helped Muhammad Rasool fire the winner for Pakistan in the 89th minute.
Pakistan coach Muhammad Rasheed, who took over the reins after Bahraini Salman Sharida’s exit in December last year, gave full credit for the astounding victory to teamwork. “Singapore undoubtedly played well in the first half and pressurised us but we adopted a different approach after the break,” said Rasheed.
“I helped the players improve their weak points. Our defence was a bit lazy at times but I am happy that the team showed resilience in the later stages of the match.”
Singapore coach Terry Pathmanathan was disappointed with the result. “It was not a performance which I was looking for and the way our side performed really disappointed me,” he told The News.
In Kolkata, Pakistan’s neighbours India had goalkeeper Subrata Paul to thank for a neat 4-1 win over Myanmar on penalties after the second leg ended a goal apiece at the Salt Lake Stadium, tying the aggregate score 2-2. Paul stopped two shots to earn India in the second round alongside top seeds Iraq, DPR Korea and Thailand.
The match was taken into extra time by Moewin who equalised for Myanmar in injury time after Manjit Singh had put the hosts ahead in the 39th minute. In the shootout, Sunil Kumar, Debabrata Roy, N S Manju and Manjit Singh hit the target, while only Kim Myang could bulge the net for the visiting side.
Thailand ran riot against Turkmenistan for a huge 5-1 win at the Supachalasai Stadium in Bangkok. The Thais had clinched the first leg 1-0 and yesterday Teerasil Dangda (32), Teerathep Winothai (33, 42), Chakrit Buathong (60) and Warut Wongdee (71) were on the mark even as Kiatprawut Saiwaeo scored an own goal in the 46th minute.
"I told the players before the game that if we could control the situation in the opening half an hour, we would win the game because I thought they would come at us first," said Thai coach Prapol Pongpanich.
"It happened exactly as I said. The lads were very determined and did very good jobs today. I had expected a victory with a two-goal margin so the result has really flattered me," added Prapol.
Australia’s progress to the second round might have been a foregone conclusion after their 11-0 first leg win over Chinese Taipei but only a solitary goal separated the two sides in the second leg at the Chungshan Stadium in Taipei.
Captain Mark Milligan was the scorer and he struck midway through the second half to seal Australia’s berth in the second round where they face Iran, Saudi Arabia and Jordan in Group D.
“We have done what we needed to do tonight and can now concentrate on the next match against Iran in two weeks which will undoubtedly be a crucial match in the group,” said Australia coach Robert Baan.
“Our opponents played extremely defensively tonight even when they fell behind in the match so it was a very different type of match to last week for a number of reasons, not least of all our large change in playing personnel.”
Goals from Anzur Ismailov (27) and Marat Bikmaev (90) saw Uzbekistan wrap up an aggregate 6-1 win at the Central Republican Stadium in Dushanbe after their 4-1 first leg victory. The Uzbeks now find themselves in Group F where they play Korea Republic, UAE and Yemen in the second round.
Yemen made sure of second round Olympic qualifying action with a 1-1 draw in the second leg for an aggregate 3-2 win (first leg 2-1). Yasser Bassehy scored late in the 80th minute for Yemen before Palestine’s Mueen Jamal restored parity a minute before the referee’s final whistle at the neutral Zayed City Sports Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
In the one-off tie between Vietnam and Afghanistan played at the Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh, the hosts won 2-0, courtesy goals from Huynh Phuc Hiep and Nguyen Vu Phong. Vietnam join Oman, Lebanon and Indonesia, who drew goalless with Maldives for an aggregate 1-0 win, in the second round in Group C.
Hong Kong wrapped up an aggregate 3-1 win over Bangladesh despite losing the second leg at home in the Chungshai Stadium 1-0. Zahid Hassan Emily was on the mark for Bangladesh in the 43rd minute though it proved to be too little and too late.
The 24-team second round qualifying, which has been split into six groups of four each, runs through February 28 to June 6, 2007, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the Final round which will be played in three groups of four teams each.
The Final home-and-away round will be held from August 22 till November 21, 2007, with the three group winners representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games. China have automatic qualification as hosts.

2008北京奧運會足球預選賽：巴基斯坦力克新加坡晉級小組淘汰賽

（吉隆坡）巴基斯坦在2008北京奧運會足球預選賽中創造了最大的冷門，在首輪2比1客場擊敗新加坡之後，繼續在第二回合的主場比賽中3比2再次戰勝新加坡，以總比分5比3淘汰新加坡晉級下一輪的小組淘汰賽。
晉級後的巴基斯坦國奧隊將於卡塔爾、巴林和科威特同在A組繼續2008北京奧運會足球預選賽的征程。巴基斯坦主教練默哈默德拉瑟德在賽後高興的說道：「新加坡在上半場表現的相當出色，毫無疑問的給我們很大壓力，但是全隊在下半場採取了不同戰術方法，及時改變了策略，這才能在本場比賽中反敗為勝。」
這位在去年12月接替巴林主帥薩裡達的帥鞭之後上任的主帥把勝利的結果全部歸功於本隊的球員，他繼續說道：「我幫助球員提高了其自身的弱點，防守雖然有點懶散，但很高興在團隊精神的努力下能夠晉級下一階段的比賽。」
新加坡主帥特裡對本場比賽結果表現了極大的失望，「這不是我們應該有的表現，這讓我很失望。」
巴基斯坦近鄰印度也傳來了好消息，在總比分2比2戰平的情況下最終以4比1擊敗緬甸，成功闖入下一輪，他們在小組賽預選賽中將遭遇伊拉克、朝鮮和泰國。
在首回合1比0取勝的泰國本輪在主場再次以5比1大勝土庫曼斯坦，主帥彭帕尼奇在賽後高興的說道：「賽前我就告訴球員我們能夠在開場前的30分鐘控制比賽，先發制人的技戰術會讓我們會贏得比賽，結果也向我們預料的一樣，隊員們表現的都很出色，對獲勝表現出了必勝的信心。但我也只是覺得能夠贏得2球而以，攻入5球的結果讓我很意外。」
澳大利亞在首回合11比0大勝中國台北之後，在台北中山體育場的第二回合僅以1比0小勝，澳大利亞將在D組的小組賽中遭遇伊朗、沙特和約旦。主帥羅伯特對此說道：「全隊取得了我們要取得的目標，現在的工作重心是備戰2周後對陣伊朗的小組賽，毫無疑問這將是至關重要的一場比賽。」
埃斯麥洛夫和比克瑪耶夫在27和90分鐘的入球幫助烏茲別克斯坦以6比1的總比分戰勝了鄰居塔吉克斯坦，烏茲別克斯坦將在小組賽的預選賽中與韓國、阿聯酋和也門同在F組。同組的也門也是在昨天的比賽中艱苦的1比1戰平巴勒斯坦之後，以3比2的總比分晉級下一輪。
本次資格賽唯一的一場定勝負的比賽中，東道主越南在南定對陣阿富汗的比賽中也以2比0戰勝對手成功晉級，與近鄰印度尼西亞一起晉級下一輪小組預選賽，同組的還有阿曼與黎巴嫩。
中國香港則在本輪的主場比賽中意外的0比1敗給孟加拉，但還是憑借首回合3比0的比分以3比1晉級小組賽預選賽，小組賽的另外3個對手為日本、馬來西亞和敘利亞。
目前為止，24支小組賽預選賽的球隊已經全部產生，從2007年2月28日至6月6日，他們將被分成6組進行主客場的淘汰賽，每組前2名將晉級最後的3個小組淘汰賽，其比賽日期為今年8月22日至11月21日，每組的冠軍將代表亞洲參加2008年北京奧運會足球賽。
