Maduro gets Netherlands going

The Netherlands got the defence of their UEFA European Under-21 Championship title off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory against Israel.

Bright start
Hedwiges Maduro tapped in the only goal on ten minutes as the hosts picked up from where they left off in Portugal 12 months ago. Captain Ron Vlaar and Ismaïl Aissati were the only survivors from the side that defeated Ukraine in the 2006 final in Porto, but Foppe de Haan's new-look team had no intention of letting the trophy slip from their grasp. Vlaar fired a free-kick over on two minutes before Ryan Babel shot narrowly wide. The Dutch did not have it all their own way though. The Jong Oranje had lost their opening game against Ukraine a year ago and suffered another early scare here, Eliran Danin crossing low to an unmarked Omer Peretz who, ghosting in from the right, shot wide from 12 metres.

Maduro scores
Three minutes later the Netherlands went ahead, Royston Drenthe curling a free-kick to the far post where Maduro touched in. It was the ideal start for the hosts, but Israel responded well. Guy Levy's team had defeated France in the play-offs to qualify for the first time and with a coiterie of senior internationals in their ranks they soon recovered their composure. The lively Ben Sahar and Barak Itzhaki were initially a threat on the break, but as the half progressed Israel began increasingly to take the game to their opponents.

Aissati injured
Chances were few although the Netherlands should have scored again eight minutes before the break. Israel goalkeeper Tom Al Madon missed Drenthe's cross which fell to Babel who somehow shot over from one metre. Dutch disappointment was compounded when Aissati hobbled off with what looked like a recurrence of his long-term knee problem. Things might have got worse still for De Haan, back at the club where he made his name as a coach, a minute after the restart when Sahar pounced on a slip by Drenthe, but the Chelsea FC starlet shot straight at Boy Waterman. For the Netherlands, Otman Bakkal, Aissati's replacement, almost forced a breakthrough on 53 minutes when he teed up Haris Medunjanin who shot wide. Moments later Babel found Maduro in space but his drive was well held by Al Madon.

Late pressure
The Dutch were back on top but had little to show for their possession. Babel shot tamely at Al Madon and Bakkal glanced a header wide and there remained the suspicion that Israel could spoil the party until the hosts stepped up a gear in the final ten minutes. Drenthe almost made sure of the result with a pair of rasping drives in quick succession and substitute Daniël de Ridder also drew a smart save from Al Madon. One goal, though, proved enough. The Netherlands continue their Group A campaign against Portugal on Tuesday when Israel play Belgium.

　　马杜罗进球
　　3分钟后，荷兰队卷土重来，德伦特开出一脚弧线任意球，球正好找到了远门柱的马杜罗，后者轻松进球。这对东道主来说是个理想的开始，但是以色列队展开了有效反击，列维的球队曾经在预选赛附加赛上击败了法国，并且队中有几名从国家队回来的队员，实力上有了很大增强。活跃的本萨哈尔和伊扎基一直对荷兰队形成威胁，中场休息之后，以色列队开始适应荷兰队的打法。

　　艾萨蒂受伤了

Group A rivals share spoils

Belgium and Portugal took one point apiece from their first appearance at this UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the Group A contest in Gronginen ending goalless.

Parity
Both sides have been hailed, in some quarters, as potential winners of this tournament, yet over the 90 minutes it was a strong and lively Belgium team who staked the more convincing claim. Only their inability to convert a flurry of first-half chances preserved the stalemate.

Big reputation
The Euroborg Stadium complex boasts a further education college, which was appropriate as Portugal are many people's idea of a Grade A student at this level. Coach José Couceiro counted on five graduates of the Sporting Clube de Portugal academy, with two featuring in the early exchanges. After Manuel Fernandes had shot into the side-netting, the same midfielder passed in-field to João Moutinho whose first-time touch sent Sporting team-mate Yannick Djaló racing into the opposition box. The finish had rather less gloss, being blasted against goalkeeper Logan Bailly.

Growing force
After a tentative start, Belgium began to suggest why they have been billed as their country's best generation in a decade. Anthony Vanden Borre released Kevin Mirallas in the penalty area but with Portugal keeper Paulo Ribeiro exposed, the forward dragged his attempt wide. Giant central midfielder Marouane Fellaini then advanced to knock down a long ball to the feet of Mirallas, who fired over when free. Despite being deployed in a defensive role, Fellaini was a target for high balls around the Portugal box, showing the fluidity of François De Sart's 4-3-3 formation.

Dominance
Although Van Borre appeared hampered by a left-foot injury, it was his right foot that almost connected with captain Maarten Martens' cross-cum-shot towards the half-hour. And the same player rode the sliding tackle of Semedo to surge towards the Portugal area in a two-on-two situation which was defused when his through-pass fell short. With willing forwards Martens and Mirallas keeping Portugal's defence on edge, Jonathan Blondel crossed, Fellaini challenged Paulo Ribeiro, and the unclaimed ball was sidefooted wide by Vanden Borre. Belgium were dominant. Sepp De Roover broke down the right before playing in Martens, whose shot was blocked by Paulo Ribeiro, the rebound being sent over by Blondel. Mirallas's relentless front-running should also have brought reward when he grazed the post.

Near misses
If the first-half honours went to De Sart's protégés, Belgium continued to look the more enterprising side as the second period unfolded. Mirallas the spearhead, supported by Vanden Borre, Maartens and Blondel, were running their socks off in search of the breakthrough. On the hour, this almost came at the other end. Yannick centred from the left, Hugo Almeida punched a header towards goal, Bailly made a brilliant save. This was not a tide-turning event. As a hot day surrendered entirely to a cool, damp evening, there was an air of desperation about Portugal's defending. Only Mirallas himself stopped Vanden Borre getting on the end of a menacing deep cross. When Fellaini did connect with a Sébastien Pocognoli delivery, he nodded wastefully over.

Profligacy
Belgium were nearly left to rue their profligacy as the game entered its final ten minutes. Substitute Silvestre Varela's shot from inside the Belgium box required the intervention of two defenders to deflect it over; Manuel Fernandes's devastating effort from outside almost burnt a hole in the side-netting. In keeping with the overall complexion of the match, however, Manuel da Costa was forced to head clear Tom De Mul's curling strike in the dying seconds.

　　比利时占优
　　双方都被认为在本届比赛中有夺冠潜力，但在今天的90分钟比赛中，比利时队显得更加强大和活跃，只是他们没能抓住上半场的数次进球良机才让0-0的僵局得以维持到终场。

　　葡萄牙率先发难

　　最后的杀机
　　最后10分钟，比利时队几乎为自己此前的挥霍机会付出代价。葡萄牙队的替补巴雷拉禁区内的射门在两位比利时后卫的拼死干扰下才高出横梁、费尔南德斯禁区外的怒射则又一次打在边网上。不过最后时刻比利时队也仍有机会绝杀，可惜德-穆尔的弧线球射门最终被葡萄牙的达科斯塔用头解围。

England rue Lita miss in stalemate

Leroy Lita missed an 88th-minute penalty as England were held to a goalless draw by the Czech Republic in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group B opener.

No breakthrough
The second-half substitute grazed Zdenĕk Zlámal's right upright with his spot-kick two minutes from time after good work from David Nugent had drawn a handball from Roman Hubník. It would have edged a tense encounter at the Gelredome, which saw plenty of chances go begging after half-time. Kieran Richardson should have broken the deadlock on 49 minutes but contrived to apply too light a touch from two metres out. It marked the start of a vibrant spell. Daniel Pudil blazed over when he should have done better, though he almost made amends soon after, his fierce free-kick looking destined for the top corner before it was tipped on to the crossbar by Scott Carson. Next it was Nugent's turn, capitalising on a Luboš Hušek slip and firing centimetres past the post. It was not a day for strikers.

Fractious half
The previous person to play at the Gelredome had been Dutch trance artist DJ Tïesto, but there was little high tempo in a fractious first half where defences dominated. The expectant crowd had to wait until the seventh minute before Tom Huddlestone fired the first salvo of the game well wide of the post. It was to prove a nervous opening for the Tottenham Hotspur FC youngster and moments later his slip almost let in Ladislav Škorpil's side. František Rajtoral capitalised on some lax control midway through England's half before feeding the ball to Jan Kysela, whose deflected effort was parried to safety by Carson.

Rajtoral zip
Much of the organised Czechs' more expansive play was coming from the colourful boots of Rajtoral, who needed little invitation to drift in from the right wing and work space for his forwards. He gained some success but his team lost momentum when Daniel Kolář was replaced by Martin Fillo on 18 minutes and England took the initiative. Nigel Reo-Coker disappointed when he was put through by Huddlestone and drove over, though the captain bore no fault moments later when he was denied by a superb last-ditch challenge from Michal Švec as he prepared to shoot after a blistering counterattack led by Nugent.

Defensive absentees
Despite these openings, England were struggling to marry possession with meaningful chances as the Czech Republic's deep-lying defence frustrated their pacy attackers, and they always appeared susceptible on the counterattack. With Anton Ferdinand joining the suspended Steven Taylor on the sidelines after failing to shake off a groin injury, coach Stuart Pearce had been forced to partner right-back Nedum Onuoha and Gary Cahill in central defence. The latter did well to block a goal-bound Kysela strike nine minutes before half-time yet at times he struggled to deal with the guile of the lone forward.

Richardson miss
Indeed, the centre-back was booked three minutes after the restart; the turning of the tide, perhaps, in the battle between attack and defence. Within a minute England should have gone ahead when James Milner's cross was headed towards the back post by Nugent and Richardson missed with the goal at his mercy. It was a sign of things to come as even when he had only the goalkeeper to beat, Lita slotted wide.

　　难以驾驭的上半场
　　前一个在盖尔雷多姆表演的人是荷兰DJ蒂耶斯托，但是这一次防守成了上半场的主要格调。心情急切的观众在比赛进行了7分钟之后，才等来英格兰中场赫德斯通的一脚射门，这脚射门虽然偏得离谱，却可以证明这位托特纳姆中场球员的紧张，几分钟之后身材高大的赫德斯通跑动中差点滑倒，给了斯科皮尔执教的捷克好机会，拉伊托拉尔在中场轻松得球，带球直奔英格兰的半场，然后送出妙传给基塞拉，只是后者的射门被卡森拼命挡出。

　　拉伊托拉尔的活力
　　组织严密的捷克队的很多攻势来自拉伊托拉尔，有趣的是他在比赛中穿了两只颜色不同的鞋，他可以在右路很小的空间内找出传球空档，他多次传出好球，但是捷克队却渐渐陷入被动，因为中场核心科拉尔第18分钟就因伤被菲洛替换下场，英格兰队从此占据了主动。里奥科克接到赫德斯通的直传球后将球带大，让他自己也十分失望，几分后努根特发动防守反击，英格兰队长里奥-科克正要起脚射门，但是被防线上最后一人斯维茨破坏。

　　防线缺席者
　　在首场比赛中，英格兰队努力得控制场面并且获得了大把机会，但是捷克队赖以生存的防线却一次次挫败了英格兰的高速锋线，每次反击捷克队防线都表现得十分敏感。由于安东-费迪南德和史蒂夫-泰勒两名主力中卫被停赛，皮尔斯只能用边后卫奥努奥哈和卡希尔临时拼凑中路防线，但是这两人却很好的阻止了基塞拉在上半场第36分钟的射门，卡希尔没有被基塞拉的假动作晃倒是关键一环。

　　理查森错失机会
　　卡希尔上半场表现出色，但是下半场刚开始3分钟他就得到黄牌，但是英格兰和捷克互换了攻防角色，英格兰开始大举进攻，卡希尔得到黄牌后不到一分钟，米尔纳的传中球被努根特摆渡后到了后门柱，可惜后点无人盯防的理查森未能碰到球，也许这是本场比赛的一个预兆，英格兰队无法击败捷克门将，最后利塔射失点球证明了这点。

Milovanović strike upsets Italy

Serbia seized the early initiative in UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group B as Dejan Milovanović's fine second-half strike earned three points against five-time winners Italy in Nijmegen.

Missed chances
In what is widely considered the oldest city in the Netherlands, the new generation of continental superstars showed how one of football's strongest traditions - the failure to take chances proving costly - still holds true in the modern game. Italy spurned three excellent first-half opportunities and were made to pay 18 minutes into the second half when Milovanović, one of four Serbia players on show who were involved in the 2004 final defeat by Italy, drilled in the only goal from distance. Serbia next play the Czech Republic, who drew 0-0 with Italy's next opponents England earlier in the day, on Thursday.

Counterattack danger
Serbia coach Miroslav Djukić had said he expected Italy to allow his side to control the pace of the match while looking to threaten on the counterattack, and so it proved as the Serbs - the top scorers in qualifying among the eight finalists with ten goals in four games - pressed forward from the outset. They struggled to unpick a typically well-drilled Italy defence, however, and it was the Azzurrini who menaced first, Raffaele Palladino and Alberto Aquilani fashioning a chance for Giampaolo Pazzini on the edge of the area. The ACF Fiorentina striker had hit a hat-trick in Italy's last U21 outing, against England in March, but this time his shot slipped past the post.

Kahriman saves
Italy then lost goalkeeper Gianluca Curci, who limped off with a groin strain, but his replacement Emiliano Viviano had little to do as Pierluigi Casiraghi's team began to take command. Serbia keeper Damir Kahriman got down smartly to gather Riccardo Montolivo's low effort and touched Palladino's attempt wide after the midfielder had latched on to Giorgio Chiellini's through-ball, although the Azzurrini should have been ahead before then. Alessandro Rosina, becoming the first Italian to take part in three U21 finals, sprang Serbia's offside trap with a lofted pass that found Palladino in the clear, but again the forward could only steer a shot wide.

Milovanović winner
Serbia started the second period on the front foot and Milan Smiljanić's curling drive forced Viviano into gainful employment for the first time. Substitute Zoran Tošić then flashed a shot over yet Italy failed to heed the warning and fell behind three minutes past the hour. Two of the veterans of 2004 were involved, Boško Janković's attempted flick falling perfectly for Milovanović to thump an unstoppable 25-metre effort low into the corner of the net. The Italy keeper then kept out the goalscorer's free-kick, which looked destined to find the other corner, although Pazzini wasted a glorious chance to equalise in added time, heading over Andrea Raggi's cross as one goal proved enough for a jubilant Serbia.

All set for knockout stage draws of ACL, AFC Cup and AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

KUALA LUMPUR: The draws for the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League 2007 and AFC Cup 2007 will be held tomorrow at AFC House along with the draw for the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will kick off the proceedings with 12 teams coming out of the pots for the crunch qualifiers which will be played between August 22-November 21.

Teams will be classified on the basis of the Men’s Olympic Football Competition – Athens 2004 and Asian Final Round. Pot A containing the 3 highest-ranked countries (Korea Republic, Japan, Iraq), pot B the countries ranked 4 to 6 (Bahrain, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia), pot C the countries ranked 7 to 9 (DPR Korea, Qatar, Syria), pot D the countries ranked 10 to 12 (Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Australia).

For the AFC Cup 2007 home-and-away knockout phase, the teams will be looking to avoid two-time defending champions Al Faisaly of Jordan in the draw. The teams which have qualified for the last eight are Al Nejmeh (Lebanon), Shabab Al Ordun and Al Wihdat (both Jordan), Sun Hei (Hong Kong), Singapore Armed Forces FC (Singapore), Mahindra United (India) and Tampines Rovers.

The AFC Champions League 2007 knockout stage draw will see Al Wahda (UAE), Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Al Karama (Syria), Sepahan (Iran), Urawa Red Diamonds, Kawasaki Frontale (both Japan) and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (Korea Republic) being slotted. Defending champions Jeonbuk Motors, who got a bye into the knockout stage, round off the list.

（吉隆坡）2007年亞冠聯賽和亞足聯盃8強淘汰賽，以及2008年北京奧運亞洲區預選賽決賽階段的抽籤，訂於週三在亞足聯總部舉行。

2008年北京奧運亞洲區預選賽決賽階段的分組抽籤，率先在1400時舉行，接著才輪到亞足聯盃（1500時）和亞冠聯賽（1530時）的8強抽籤。

2008年北京奧運亞洲區預選賽決賽階段訂於8月22日至11月21日上演，晉級的12隊是巴林、卡塔爾、日本、敘利亞、越南、黎巴嫩、沙特阿拉伯、澳大利亞、朝鮮、伊拉克、韓國和烏茲別克。

殺進亞冠聯賽8強的隊伍是阿爾華達（阿聯酋）、阿爾希拉爾（沙特阿拉伯）、阿爾卡拉默（敘利亞）、塞帕漢（伊朗）、浦和紅鑽（日本）、川崎前鋒（日本）、城南一和（韓國），以及在小組賽輪空、直接進入淘汰賽階段的衛冕冠軍全北現代（韓國）。

亞足聯盃方面，闖入8強的是阿爾內澤默（黎巴嫩）、薩巴普（約旦）、阿爾維達特（約旦）、衛冕冠軍阿爾費薩里（約旦）、香雪晨曦（香港）、軍團（新加坡）、淡濱尼流浪（新加坡）和馬欣德拉聯（印度）。

Japan handed tough draw in AFC Final Round Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

KUALA LUMPUR: The draw for the AFC Final Round Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has been made with Japan, who were the only team to qualify with a flawless record in the second stage, handed a tough outing in Group C against the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Vietnam.

Group A saw 2004 Olympics fourth-place finishers Iraq grouped with DPR Korea, Lebanon and Australia, while in Group B, Korea Republic will have Bahrain, Syria and Uzbekistan for company.

Twelve teams came out of the pots today at the AFC House here and were split into three groups of four each for the final round which will run through August 22 till November 21, with only the group toppers representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games next year. Hosts China qualify automatically.

Japan were by far the most impressive side in the second stage, winning each and every game, but coach Yasuharu Sorimachi will need to reproduce that magic when playing against Saudi Arabia, who pushed the strong Australians into second place in Group D, and Vietnam, who topped Group C ahead of Lebanon on goal difference. The Japanese are also bound to find Qatar, runners-up in Group A, tricky customers.

Vietnam’s performance was so impressive that senior national team coach Alfred Riedl promptly called up 12 Olympic side members to the AFC Asian Cup 2007™ squad.

Group A is also perhaps the most well balanced of the three groups with Group E toppers Iraq and runners-up DPR Korea, and Asian newcomers Australia all in with a chance. The Australians were pushed hard in Group D but eventually managed to book their berth.

Iraq have the most impeccable pedigree of this lot, having finished fourth in the 2004 Olympics after losing to Italy 1-0 in the bronze medal playoff. Iraq had defeated Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals then.

Korea Republic seem to be favourites, at least on paper, to advance from Group B, especially after their powerful performance in Group F. Uzbekistan, their group rivals, are no strangers after both slugged it out in the second stage, with the Koreans comfortably finishing on top of the group.

                （吉隆坡）2008年北京奧運會足球賽亞洲區預選賽的分組抽籤儀式於今天下午在馬來西亞吉隆坡的亞足聯總部舉行，來自於亞洲的12支隊伍最終晉級了這次最後的預選賽。
A組的4個國家為朝鮮、伊拉克、黎巴嫩和澳大利亞，B組的國家為韓國、巴林、敘利亞於烏茲別克斯坦，東亞勁旅日本被分到了C組，同組對手分別來自於沙特、卡塔爾和越南。
日本在先前晉級賽中的成績最好，以不敗的戰績進入了最後預選賽，但面對強敵如林的C組，相信主教練反町康治要想出良機妙策才可能從這『死亡之組』脫穎而出。A組的實力同樣不能小視，有著澳大利亞、朝鮮、伊拉克的A組最終誰能脫穎而出，恐怕要等到最後一輪結束之後才能揭曉。
與另外兩個小組相比，韓國所在的B組則在總體實力上略差一些，因此韓國毫無疑問成為了B組的出線大熱門。

Mirallas leaves Belgium on the brink

Ten-man Belgium took a major step towards the UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-finals by beating Group A rivals Israel 1-0 through Kevin Mirallas's 82nd-minute goal.

Inspirational display
Mirallas’s winning strike in Heerenveen capped an inspirational display of front-running from the LOSC Lille Métropole striker in a Belgium team who played for 72 minutes with ten men following Marouane Fellaini's early sending-off. For Israel, this second successive 1-0 defeat brings elimination and how they will rue their failure to capitalise on the extra-man advantage.

Changes
If Belgium were unchanged following their impressive showing against Portugal, Israel coach Guy Levy responded to his side's defeat by the Netherlands by making four changes, among them the introduction of the influential Idan Srur to make the play behind a forward line now including Shlomi Arbeitman alongside Ben Sahar and Barak Itzhaki. Levy had spelt out his wish to see more attacking ambition from his players yet in the opening stages they were on the back foot.

Fellaini dismissed
Mirallas served an early warning after eight minutes with a shot from outside the box that forced Tom Al Madon into a fingertip save. Sixty seconds later the Israel goal came under threat again, Sébastien Pocognoli picking out Fellaini with his cross but the Belgium midfielder failed to make a clean contact with the ball. If Belgium looked untroubled, that changed on 18 minutes with Fellaini's dismissal. Eliran Danin went to ground under his challenge and the midfielder, already cautioned for fouling Sahar, was sent off.

De Sart gamble
Logan Bailly had to turn behind Srur's ensuing free-kick and it then took a sliding challenge from Pocognoli to deny Arbeitman a clean strike after the skilful Sahar had played his colleague in. Given Belgium's need for the points, however, coach Jean-François De Sart gambled on keeping his front players on, leaving Jan Vertonghen to do double the covering work in front of the back four.

Israel threaten
Although Anthony Vanden Borre spurned a shooting chance on 26 minutes, Israel now carried the greater menace albeit without really stretching the ten men. Itzhaki sent a drive just over but it was not until the half's closing moments that they really threatened. After Bailly had inadvertently collected a back-pass, Srur's short free-kick teed up Itzhaki but he blasted over. Then Sahar broke through on a one-two with Srur only to see his goalbound effort blocked by Nicolas Lombaerts.

Sahar shines
Into the second half and Sahar was in his stride, flashing a shot narrowly wide and troubling the Diablotins' defence with his elusive movement down the left. One lovely flick sent him racing clear of Sepp De Roover and bearing down on Bailly. He squared the ball to Albeitman but, with the goal gaping, the striker was foiled by Thomas Vermaelen's block. At the other end, Mirallas raised Belgian hopes with a run through the middle stopped only by Amir Taga's saving tackle and shortly after the hour, Blondel was only a whisker wide with an acrobatic volley.

Belgium rewarded
Although Sahar hit the post from an offside position, Belgium's ten men were now looking the likelier scorers. Blondel lashed another volley into the side-netting before, on 80 minutes, Mirallas struck the woodwork. The No9 would not be denied, however. Sprinting on to Vanden Borre's diagonal pass ahead of Dekel Keinan, he beat Al Madon with a low shot for the only goal.

　　比赛开始仅10分钟，比利时中场费莱尼就被罚下场，坚持了70分钟之后，米兰拉斯第82分钟打出的致胜球是一种鼓舞人心的表演，对以色列来说，这个进球把他们提前淘汰，他们肯定会为自己在多一人的情况下未能把握机会而懊悔不已。

　　比利时队保持了对阵葡萄牙时的基本打法，和首场输给荷兰的比赛相比，以色列队主教练列维则在四个方面作了改变，名气很大的斯鲁尔首发出场，和阿贝特曼一起支援双前锋萨哈尔和伊扎基，列维希望球队更具攻击性，因为在首场比赛中，以色列队显得太退守太多。

　　比利时队少一人之后，以色列开始大举进攻，拜利先是挡住了来自斯鲁尔的任意球射门，然后阿贝特曼和萨哈尔配合之后正要完成最后一击，波科尼奥利及时赶到滑铲破坏。在比利时必须从这场比赛中拿到积分的情况下，德萨尔还是押宝前锋，保持锋线两人的配置，让维尔通根在四名后卫前担任清扫任务。

　　比利时收到回报

Rigters sends hosts into last four

With senior Netherlands coach Marco van Basten looking on from the stands the hosts turned on the style to defeat Portugal 2-1 and become the first side to progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Drive and vigour
Van Basten would have liked what he saw as Foppe de Haan's Jong Oranje played with a drive and vigour missing from their victory against Israel four days earlier. Goals in each half from Ryan Babel, a penalty, and Maceo Rigters and another commanding performance from Royston Drenthe made sure of the points, though a near capacity crowd in the Euroborg were made to sweat for victory after Miguel Veloso pulled a goal back late on. While the Netherlands can now dream of the Olympics, Portugal must beat Israel on Saturday to have a chance of avoiding an early exit for the second year running.

Drenthe impresses
It was safety first for Portugal coach José Couceiro who had clearly picked Drenthe out as the Dutch dangerman. He made three changes from the side that had drawn with Belgium, and two of the new faces, Amoreirinha and Ruben Amorim, came in on the right in a bid to contain the Feyenoord player. Drenthe, though, simply picked up from where he left off against Israel. Amoreirinha was booked for bringing him down in the fifth minute before Drenthe crossed to Ryan Donk who, just as Babel had done against Israel, contrived to shoot over when it looked easier to score.

Exhilarating
Belgium's victory against Israel earlier in the evening had added to the pressure on Portugal who enjoyed plenty of possession without creating any end product. In contrast, the Netherlands attacked with purpose with Drenthe the driving force. On 27 minutes the 20-year-old blazed over after another exhilarating forward dash and it seemed a goal could not be long in coming.

Babel scores
It duly arrived six minutes later. Babel fed Rigters on the right and the striker was brought down by goalkeeper Paulo Ribeiro. Babel drilled in the spot-kick to bring the Netherlands their reward. The substitution of Boy Waterman, who was suffering from a back injury, for Kenneth Vermeer, the Netherlands goalkeeper when they won this competition last year, briefly slowed Dutch momentum, but De Haan's side were soon back in full flow. Otman Bakkal slipped the ball to Rigters who shot against the post two minutes before the break.

Moutinho subdued
Bakkal had replaced the injured Ismaïl Aissati, who will play no further part in the competition because of a torn meniscus, but the PSV Eindhoven player's absence was not felt in the first half against a Portugal side that showed little urgency until after the break. Vermeer was soon forced into saves from Hugo Almeida and Veloso, but when Couceiro was sent to the stands for persistent complaining on 63 minutes it only served to rouse the home crowd.

Rigters strikes
Portugal were increasingly forcing the holders back and were unlucky not to draw level on 72 minutes. Semedo's shot deflected off Vlaar, but Vermeer showed great reflexes to save. Three minutes later the Netherlands appeared to make the game safe when Rigters turned in Drenthe's low cross. Veloso's superb free-kick with 13 minutes to play, however, set up a tense finale which brought plenty of drama but no further goals.

Late drama sends Serbia through

A last-gasp goal from Boško Janković earned victory against the Czech Republic and sent Serbia into the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship as the winners of Group B.

Healthy prospects
The sign welcoming visitors to Nijmegen bills it as "City of health", and having beaten Italy here on Monday, Serbia's prospects of reaching the last four of this tournament for the third finals running certainly appeared rosy. The Czechs shared a goalless draw with England in their opening fixture and looked to have held on for another point here, but three minutes into added time, Antonio Rukavina set Milan Smiljanić free down the right and Janković got ahead of Michal Kadlec to head his side through. The result, coupled with England's 2-2 draw against Italy in tonight's late game, ensures Miroslav Djukić's side will finish first in the section and play the Group A runners-up in Arnhem next Wednesday in the last four.

Set-piece threat
Djukić had promised his team would go for the win and Smiljanić duly threatened within the first two minutes, although at the other end two right-wing corners from Tomáš Jirsák might have led to a Czech Republic goal as first Michal Papadopulos and then Milan Kopic sent headers narrowly off target. In a lively opening 45 minutes, Dejan Milovanović's whipped free-kick from the left caused problems for Zdeněk Zlámal, before the Czech goalkeeper raced off his line to deny Dragan Mrdja after Stefan Babović's pass had split the defence.

Kahriman called upon
With the Czech Republic midfield deprived of Daniel Kolář and Luboš Hušek due to an ankle injury and sickness respectively, Zlámal's opposite number Damir Kahriman had been largely a spectator but he was in the thick of the action as the half drew to a close, foiling Martin Fillo and Jirsák. The Serbia keeper then carefully gathered Jirsák's free-kick from the corner of the box, although he was rooted to the spot as Jiří Kladrubský's shot deflected just over in added time.

Kladrubský denied
Mrdja made way for Djordje Rakić at half-time and Serbia began to look more dangerous, Rukavina bursting forward and laying a clever ball back to Smiljanić, who blazed over. Janković also tried his luck from distance but the best chance came in the opposite area. Again Jirsák was the architect, finding Kladrubský inside the box and he worked space with a clever turn before unleashing an effort that Kahriman palmed away with an outstretched hand.

Janković trickery
Papadopulos volleyed Josef Kaufman's header too high before Serbia substitute Dušan Basta narrowly failed to find the target with an angled volley. Janković and Rakić both tested Zlámal, who seemed to have earned his side a point only for Janković to beat him in the final seconds. Serbia will win the group with victory in their final fixture against England on Sunday, when the Czechs, who can still progress, take on Italy, although Fillo will be suspended for that game having picked up an early yellow card here.

Italy battle back to hold England

Italy came from two goals down to keep alive their hopes of qualification with a 2-2 draw against England in UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group B as a Gelredome crowd of 17,000 were treated to a thrilling encounter.

Aquilani equaliser
England had looked to be cruising when David Nugent and Leroy Lita scored two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half but the Azzurrini responded perfectly. Ten minutes before the interval Giorgio Chiellini pulled one back and Italy threw caution to the wind as the second period wore on, eventually getting their reward midway through the half when Alberto Aquilani's raking drive crept in.

Elimination
Some of the Azzurrini squad had stood on the halfway line before the match, watching events unfold in Nijmegen as Serbia beat the Czech Republic to go through to the last four – a result that ensured one of these sides would be returning home after Sunday. Goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, in the team as No1 Gianluca Curci was injured, began determined it should not be his, pulling off a stunning reflex save to bat away Steven Taylor's close-range header on ten minutes. He was grateful for some profligate shooting from Lita midway through the opening half, however, as the England No16 squandered two gilt-edged chances.

Chances aplenty
First Mark Noble, one of three changes to the England lineup held by the Czechs, sent him clear with a sumptuous through-ball. With Viviano slipping, the Reading FC man needed only to side-foot in, yet he somehow contrived to slot wide. Having missed a penalty on Monday he must have questioned his luck, a feeling that merely grew when he fired against the crossbar moments later after the Italy keeper fumbled. It sparked a frenetic spell. James Milner delivered an inviting ball across goal while at the other end, it took a brilliant Taylor block to deny Giampaolo Pazzini.

Lita relief
The Italy striker scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw between these countries in March, and goals appeared on the cards again. Ashley Young sent the ball just wide on the counterattack before Nugent finally broke the deadlock on 24 minutes, diving low to head in Leighton Baines's arcing centre. Two minutes later Lita added a second, hammering in after being put through by Young. It was not the end of the drama. Aquilani grazed the crossbar with a fizzing long-range shot though the Italians' first goal owed much to good fortune as a deflected corner cannoned off Raffaele Palladino and Chiellini and into the net.

Italian initiative
The Italy left-back almost turned provider immediately, crossing for Pazzini whose header was clawed away by Carson, who was the busier keeper thereafter. He kept out another Pazzini threat before half-time and, after the restart, dived low to save Riccardo Montolivo's rasping drive. By then Pierluigi Casiraghi had made a double change, bringing on Marco Motta and Giuseppe Rossi, and the latter drilled an attempt just over on 55 minutes as Italy piled forward. Their equaliser eventually came on 69 minutes - Aquilani's low strike just beating Carson - and although Young twice went close to restoring England's lead, his efforts were saved and a late yellow card rules him out of Sunday's game against Serbia.

Victory in vain for four-goal Portugal

There was a rainbow over the Euroborg before kick-off but Portugal's hopes of finding a pot of gold here in the Netherlands ended despite this comfortable victory against Israel in their final Group A game. Belgium's 2-2 draw with the Netherlands some 60 kilometres away in Heerenveen consigned them to third place in the section, a point behind Jean-François De Sart's Belgians.

Mood turns sour
Leading 4-0 through goals from Manuel Fernandes, Ricardo Vaz Té, Miguel Veloso and Nani, everything looked rosy for Portugal until the 70th minute when news filtered through that Belgium had equalised against the Dutch. With the inspirational Nani departing on a stretcher in the same minute, suddenly the mood turned sour for José Couceiro's side. While Portugal must now wait for tomorrow's Group B deciders to find out if third spot will earn them a play-off for a berth at the 2008 Olympic Games, Israel's first U21 finals closed with this third successive defeat.

Flash of quality
Portugal had 70 per cent of possession during the opening quarter-hour yet it was Israel who had the first chance of note on 17 minutes. Idan Srur swung in a free-kick from the right but the unmarked Lior Rafaelov failed to make contact and Paulo Ribeiro saved with his feet. Almost immediately at the other end, we saw the first flash of quality from one of Portugal's highly-rated attackers as João Moutinho skipped past Eliran Danin and centred to Vaz Té but the forward, appearing for the first time in the Netherlands, headed over.

Nani to the fore
That sparked a succession of opportunities with Nani at the heart of everything. The new Manchester United FC winger had one shot deflected over, then drove another at Tom Al Madon from Hugo Almeida's knock-down. After the besieged goalkeeper had turned behind Manuel da Costa's low free-kick, Nani was at it again, hitting the top of the net with an overhead kick. A goal seemed inevitable and when it came on 37 minutes, Nani was involved again, Manuel Fernandes playing a one-two with him before driving a fierce shot in off the underside of the crossbar. Al Madon then kept out a Nani header but on the stroke of half-time, it was 2-0 as Vaz Té nodded in João Pereira's pinpoint cross.

No respite
The second half brought no respite for Israel and by the 50th minute, Portugal were out of sight. First Miguel Veloso's free-kick from out on the right evaded everyone, Al Madon included, on its way inside the far post. Sixty seconds later Nani flashed the ball past the goalkeeper from 20 metres. A real pity then that the talented 20-year-old's evening ended prematurely after a heavy tackle from Israel substitute Dani Bondarv. Israel prevented any further damage as Al Madon denied Moutinho and Danin headed off the line from Vaz Té, but Guy Levy's men missed out on the consolation of a first goal in the competition when Paulo Ribeiro saved Rami Duani's late close-range effort. While Portugal wait to see if there will indeed be an Olympic play-off on 21 June, for captain Hugo Almeida his involvement in the Netherlands is over having picked up another booking here.

Pocognoli seals Belgium progress

Sébastien Pocognoli's 70th-minute strike ensured Belgium joined the Netherlands in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-finals after an entertaining draw between the Low Countries rivals.

Pocognoli goal
With Belgium trailing 2-1 at half-time and Group A rivals Portugal beating Israel, Jean-François De Sart's side looked to be heading out of the competition. But Pocognoli made sure of their safe passage and a place in the Olympic Games when he drove powerfully beyond Kenneth Vermeer with 20 minutes left. The draw means the Netherlands finish top of Group A on seven points, two ahead of Belgium. Foppe de Haan's team will play their semi-final here on Wednesday while Belgium travel to Arnhem to play Group B winners Serbia.

Bailly save
De Haan made four changes from the side that defeated Portugal, the most surprising being Ryan Donk's move out of central defence to take the holding midfield role in place of Hedwiges Maduro. What had not changed was the confidence running through the team and after only a minute, man of the moment Royston Drenthe had raised the pulse with a shot just wide. The Netherlands were already guaranteed a ticket to the semi-finals but there was no let-up here and their attacking intentions nearly paid off on six minutes when Donk's point-blank effort was blocked by goalkeeper Logan Bailly.

Mirallas opener
Suspensions and injury had forced Belgium coach De Sart's hand and his new-look lineup took time to settle. When they finally got hold of the ball, they quickly found their feet and scored with their first meaningful attack. Tom De Mul crossed for Kevin Mirallas who headed past Vermeer on nine minutes. For the first time in the tournament the Netherlands were behind, but not for long. In front of nearly 26,000 the Jong Oranje responded in the best possible way on 13 minutes, Ryan Babel playing in strike partner Maceo Rigters for a low shot past Bailly.

Drenthe strike
An earlier downpour had left a sodden surface yet it could not dampen enthusiasm for this derby as both teams created chances in an entertaining first half. By kick-off the sun had come out and once again it was shining brightly on the irrepressible Drenthe who curled in a free-kick on 37 minutes to put the Netherlands in front. Bailly got a full palm to it, but it seems nothing can stop the Feyenoord man at the moment. With Portugal leading Israel 2-0 at half-time, Belgium were facing elimination as they came out for the start of the second half.

Salvation
Mirallas flashed an early opportunity over and Faris Haroun came close with a header, yet they lacked urgency and the Netherlands almost went further ahead on 67 minutes when Bailly saved sharply to his right to keep out Daniël de Ridder's attempt. Out of the blue, though, Belgium drew level. Pocognoli pushed forward down the left and Vermeer could only push his rising shot into the goal. Belgium supporters were as surprised as they were ecstatic. Although Otman Bakkal had a deflected strike skim wide late on for the Netherlands, it was the Belgium fans who ended the contest in full voice. Arnhem and Beijing here they come.

Victory in vain as Italy bow out

Italy failed to progress beyond the UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stage for the second season in succession despite ending Group B with a solid win against the Czech Republic in Arnhem.

Slow start
The Azurrini had won five of the last eight competitions but paid the price for taking just one point from their first two matches. That left Pierluigi Casiraghi's side relying on England failing to beat Serbia and, although Alberto Aquilani's fine fourth-minute free-kick met with wild celebrations, the mood had become more muted by the time Giorgio Chiellini restored Italy's lead after Michal Papadopulos had levelled in the 14th minute as news filtered through that England were winning. Giuseppe Rossi added a third in first-half added time but England's 2-0 victory in Nijmegen ensured Italy would finish in third place, although they do have the consolation of a play-off against Portugal on Thursday with the winner qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Early excitement
As the players prepared to kick off strains of "We will rock you" blasted round the ground and Italy took the anthem to heart, leaving their opponents shaken within the first four minutes as Aquilani's pinpoint free-kick curled over the wall and past Zdeněk Zlámal's despairing dive. Aquilani again and Marco Andreolli almost increased the lead, both from set-pieces, but within seconds of the latter opportunity the match was all square. Czech Republic coach Ladislav Škorpil had made five changes and one of the new faces, František Rajtoral, was the architect of the equaliser, evading two defenders to send in a low left-wing cross that Papadopulos prodded in ahead of Andreolli's challenge.

Set-piece threat
With both sides needing a win to keep alive realistic hopes of progress chances continued to come at both ends, Alessandro Rosina's through-pass setting Giampaolo Pazzini clear but Zlámal blocked with his right leg. The goalkeeper was beaten again a minute before the half-hour, however, Chiellini holding off three defenders to head in Rosina's deep right-wing free-kick. Rossi then extended the advantage with the final touch of the first period, rounding off a swift counterattack involving Rosina and Pazzini by skipping away from Roman Hubník to drill a low shot beyond Zlámal.

Formation change
Casiraghi had switched from his usual 4-1-4-1 formation to the 4-3-3 approach his side had employed in fighting back from two goals down against England on Thursday, and though the change had paid dividends in the first period the Czech Republic were the first to threaten after the restart, Jiří Kladrubský forcing Emiliano Viviano to push his shot over before Papadopulos glanced a header wide. The more obvious opportunities continued to come at the other end, however, Aquilani's pass putting substitute Graziano Pellè clean through but again Zlámal was sharply off his line to thwart the striker. Italy had already done enough, however, although the victory was greeted by little celebration.

England join Serbia in last four

Leroy Lita and Matt Derbyshire were on target in each half as England beat Serbia 2-0 to secure a place in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-finals.

Huddlestone dismissal
Their progress as Group B winners already confirmed, Serbia made nine changes to the side that started Wednesday's 1-0 victory against the Czech Republic, and England quickly capitalised on their lack of understanding in Nijmegen. Lita broke the deadlock inside six minutes from close range and after sustaining some second-half pressure, substitute Derbyshire sealed victory with a crisp 77th-minute strike though some of the gloss was taken off by a late Tom Huddlestone dismissal. The Tottenham Hotspur FC midfielder will now miss the semi-final with the Netherlands in Heerenveen on Wednesday, when Serbia face Belgium in Arnhem.

Kesić disappointment
The start of the match had been heralded by the sight of a blimp floating over the Goffert Stadion, and in the early stages England further underlined their ambitions of a first crown at this level in 23 years are not hot air. They were ahead within six minutes when James Milner swung in a free-kick from 25 metres to the back post where Steven Taylor was on hand to head it across goal to Lita who swooped in to force the ball in. It was the worst of starts for Serbia's debutant goalkeeper Aleksandar Kesić, and he almost conceded another soon after when Nigel Reo-Coker glanced another right-sided free-kick just over the crossbar.

Carson mark
It was all England but they soon eased off, perhaps conscious of how they had wilted after half-time at the Gelredome on Thursday, unable to maintain the high tempo that had brought them a two-goal lead against Italy. The caution allowed Serbia full-backs Nemanja Rnić and Nikola Petković to push forward, and the latter had Miroslav Djukić's team's first meaningful chance midway through the half when his arcing free-kick brought a fairly comfortable save from Scott Carson. The England No1 was making a national record 28th appearance for the Under-21s but if he aspired to impress the attendant senior manager Steve McClaren, his opportunity to do so was limited.

Midfield combination
A Nikola Drinčić free-kick caused problems in the England penalty area before the ball was hacked clear, while Carson was forced to make a rare save eight minutes before the interval to keep out Predrag Pavlović's low, swerving effort at the near post. It was a rare chance for either side as Stuart Pearce's team were content to sit back and allow West Ham United FC team-mates Reo-Coker and Mark Noble to boss central midfield.

Derbyshire strike
The one-goal lead at times looked precarious, and a slip from Milner allowed Djorde Ivelja in ten minutes after the restart and Carson spread himself to make the save. Impressive it was, but the England custodian's effort was eclipsed by that of Kesić in the other net as he reacted brilliantly to keep out an acrobatic Lita bicycle kick. Kieran Richardson should have done better with 15 minutes remaining, but failed to turn in a low centre from Derbyshire, who soon sealed a place in the last four. There was still time for Huddlestone to be sent off and Gojko Kačar to hit the post, but it was too little, too late.

Dutch oust England in epic shoot-out

The Netherlands returned to the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship for the second year running following a thrilling 13-12 victory on penalties against England after their semi-final had finished 1-1 after extra time.

Zuiverloon winner
In total 32 spot-kicks were needed to decide the tie which eventually went the way of the hosts and holders when, almost three hours after kick-off, local SC Heerenveen hero Gianni Zuiverloon fired the winning conversion low to the right of Scott Carson. Six players from each side were forced to take two penalties during an epic contest that set the record for most goals scored in a UEFA competition match as well as most in a shoot-out.

England heart
For Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan, it cancelled out bitter memories of losing 10-9 on spot-kicks to Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup two years ago, yet it was rough justice on an England team who had battled bravely throughout and played the additional half-hour with ten men after Nedum Onuoha had limped off injured. Maceo Rigters earlier saved the Jong Oranje with a thrilling overhead kick in the last minute to cancel out Leroy Lita's first-half strike for England, setting up a rousing finale and a final against Serbia in Groningen on Saturday.

Compact
England manager Stuart Pearce had welcomed back Ashley Young from suspension but otherwise kept the side that defeated Serbia in their final Group B game. De Haan had spoken of exploiting space between the England defence and midfield, but they made little headway through the middle as Nigel Reo-Coker and Mark Noble plugged the gap diligently. The Netherlands were finding more joy on the wings with Royston Drenthe and Daniël de Ridder increasingly influential.

Lita strike
Their shooting, though, was wayward and both Zuiverloon and De Ridder missed the target in quick succession when well placed. The Netherlands were assuming command and ought to have gone ahead on 24 minutes. Ryan Babel collected Rigters' flick only to shoot tamely at Carson with just the keeper to beat. England had few chances yet when one finally came their way on 39 minutes, they took it. Lita outmuscled Ron Vlaar to get to David Nugent's header and drove low via the hands of Boy Waterman for his third goal of the tournament.

Young run
Young's wing play had been England's most threatening outlet and he nearly burst through three minutes after the restart. Vlaar was booked for halting the forward's surge and from the free-kick, Lita crashed a shot off the post. Nonetheless, England soon closed ranks. Hedwiges Maduro's powerful attempt on 58 minutes was palmed away by Carson and only Steven Taylor's sprawling block kept out Rigters' effort on the rebound.

Rigters delivers
The Dutch were forcing the pace and the pressure was intense. Taylor somehow prevented Babel's low shot from deflecting in, then with five minutes to play Rigters blazed wide from the edge of the area. Home hopes appeared to have gone with that miss yet the Jong Oranje continued pushing forward and with a minute remaining, they drew level. With Taylor down injured in the area, Ryan Donk crossed for Rigters to acrobatically score his third goal of the championship with an overhead kick.

Brave Lions
England had used all three substitutions so Taylor played on in extra time despite clearly feeling effects of his injury. He hobbled into midfield, with Anton Ferdinand, a second-half replacement, slotting into central defence. Worse followed when Onuoha went off with what looked like a groin problem leaving England down to ten men. The mini-break came as sweet relief to Pearce's tiring side although the Netherlands were soon back on the attack. An unmarked Tim Janssen headed over, Drenthe shot wide but England somehow hung on, only to suffer the heartache of the most painful shoot-out defeat.

Serbia progress with perfect timing

Goals at the start and finish of the match from Aleksandar Kolarov and Dragan Mrdja took Serbia into their second UEFA European Under-21 Championship final in three attempts as they held off the challenge of a hard-working Belgium side in Nijmegen.

Free-kick opener
Kolarov's fourth-minute free-kick evaded everyone to give Serbia an initiative they were never to cede in a tense semi-final, and when substitute Mrdja ran clear to add a second with three minutes left, a squad that includes eight players who lost at this stage with Serbia and Montenegro last summer as well as three who featured when the 2004 final went Italy's way, knew they would have the chance of another U21 showpiece. Belgium, particularly Marouane Fellaini, had their chances but too often their attacks foundered on the centre-back pairing of Branislav Ivanović and Duško Tošić. Serbia now take on the Netherlands in Groningen on Saturday night.

Kolarov shock
The previous game at this venue, between Italy and the Czech Republic on Sunday, had witnessed a fourth-minute goal and Belgium began as if seeking to better that. They could have taken the lead with barely 60 seconds played. Tom De Mul tricked his way down the left and, though Kevin Mirallas missed his low cross, the ball fell perfectly for Fellaini, back from suspension, who sliced over from close range. An early goal did arrive though at the wrong end from Belgium's point of view, as Dejan Milovanović was brought down midway inside the opposing half and Kolarov's curling free-kick deceived goalkeeper Logan Bailly – who was expecting a cross – and clipped the right-hand post to nestle in the back of the net.

Martens missed
The score rocked Belgium back on their heels and, without the invention of inspirational captain Maarten Martens – kept on the bench by knee and ankle injuries – they struggled to unpick Serbia's familiarly solid back line. They were largely restricted to long-range shooting, Anthony Vanden Borre flashing one such effort just too high, although the best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes again came at the other end. Djordje Rakić sprinted away on to Milovanović's through-ball but this time Bailly was alert to the danger and raced from his line to block the striker's first-time shot.

Blondel ambition
It took a last-ditch tackle from Jonathan Blondel to prevent Milovanović breaking clear at the onset of the second period, before the midfielder threatened in opposition territory, calling Damir Kahriman into action for the first time with a dipping attempt that the Serbia goalkeeper had to flick over the crossbar. That proved a sign of things to come as Belgium began to press forward and spurned a glorious chance to draw level a minute past the hour. Faris Haroun sprang the Serbia defence and sent Fellaini clean through, yet once more Kahriman was equal to the task and saved with his left leg.

Serbia hold out
Fellaini passed up another scoring invitation moments later, nodding Sepp De Roover's cross past the post when unmarked in front of goal, although Serbia captain Ivanović might have put the match beyond Belgium when he advanced upfield to skip past three challenges only to prod a shot straight at Bailly. Haroun then sliced Fellaini's knock-down harmlessly wide before substitute Mrdja confirmed that Serbia - European U21 champions as part as Yugoslavia in 1978 – would have the opportunity to be crowned kings of the continent again as he collected Milovanović's flicked header to slide a shot past Bailly.

Ten-man Italy claim Olympic prize

Emiliano Viviano was the hero as ten-man Italy edged out Portugal in a penalty shout-out in Nijmegen to end their UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign on a high note by claiming a place in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Shoot-out drama
Both sides came into this game having won their final group games last weekend but finished third in their respective sections. Neither was able to reproduce the attacking flair they had shown in their previous matches, however, with clear chances at a premium in a tense encounter. Italy lost Giuseppe Rossi to a second bookable offence late in the second period of normal time but held on to take the game to spot-kicks where Viviano saved from Manuel Fernandes. When Antunes placed Portugal's fifth penalty wide of the post Italy – for whom Graziano Pelle, with a nerveless chip, Riccardo Montolivo, Domenico Criscito and Raffaele Palladino all converted – could celebrate their Olympic berth.

Destination Beijing
The Alex Gaudino song "Destination Calabria" with its persistent refrain of "Destination unknown" played a prominent part in the pre-match build-up, but these two sides knew their preferred next stop precisely: Beijing in 14 months. With such a prize on offer it was perhaps little surprise that the match began cautiously although Italy might have taken an eleventh-minute lead, Rossi flicking just over after Alessandro Rosina had found Marco Motta for the right-back to send in a low cross. Ricardo Vaz Té and Nani then missed the target for Portugal who, after spending much of the early exchanges on the back foot, largely controlled the second half of the opening period.

Rossi frustrated
That territorial superiority nearly became a tangible advantage as Silvestre Varela cut inside from the right and unleashed a curling left-foot effort that slipped just past the far post. Seconds later Alberto Aquilani did likewise at the other end, although without the same air of menace, but Italy did come close to the opening goal again four minutes before the interval. Antonio Nocerino's pass gave Rossi the opportunity to sprint past three defenders but the forward could not beat goalkeeper Paulo Ribeiro, who blocked well before Antunes completed the clearance.

Rossi off
Nani was the first to threaten after the restart, swerving a shot just past Viviano's left-hand post, before the Azzurrini responded with a sweeping move from left to right involving Rossi, Aquilani and Rosina, the latter playing in Montolivo for a low angled drive Paulo Ribeiro blocked with his legs. Italy suffered a major setback 16 minutes from time as Rossi was dismissed after collecting a second yellow card for dissent though Portugal were unable to press home the numerical advantage, substitute Pelle twice and Giorgio Chiellini going close for Italy.

Portugal pressure
Nani opened the first period of extra time with another low shot past the post after a slick one-touch passing move before Miguel Veloso and Manuel Fernandes also sent efforts wide as Portugal pressed Italy back. João Moreira and João Moutinho were unable to take presentable opportunities early in the second additional half, before substitute Yannick Djaló blazed over with the goal at his mercy. Those misses proved costly as the Azzurrini, the most consistent side in Olympic history having participated in 14 Games, held their nerve in the shoot-out to continue their love affair with the event.

　　意大利队在一场奥运会资格附加赛上经过点球决胜战胜了葡萄牙，获得了欧洲区最后一张奥运会入场券，维维亚诺成为了10人作战的意大利队的英雄。

　　点球决胜的悬念

Jong Oranje clinch European crown

Twelve months after winning the UEFA European Under-21 Championship for the first time, the Netherlands retained the trophy in style with a 4-1 win against Serbia in Groningen.

'Foppe'
Cries of "Foppe de Haan" rang round the Euroborg after goals from Otman Bakkal, Ryan Babel, Maceo Rigters and Luigi Bruins ensured victory, though an entertaining game was only made safe after Aleksandar Kolarov had been dismissed for a second bookable offence two minutes past the hour. The scoreline was tough on Serbia, who impressed throughout the competition less than a year after being granted full UEFA membership. But this was the Netherlands' night, and in particular that of De Haan. Before he was appointed coach in 2004 the Netherlands had never won a UEFA competition at youth or U21 level. Now winning has become a habit.

Sense of occasion
After a fortnight of heavy rain, the fiercest downpour was fittingly saved for the final and the ball skimmed quickly off the surface as lightning flashed overhead. A sizeable and vocal Serbian contingent for once gave the home support some competition and the match a sense of occasion an enjoyable tournament merited. The irrepressible Royston Drenthe was soon into the thick of the action. On nine minutes he was booked for a late challenge on Antonio Rukavina, then turned Rigters' cross over the bar. The Netherlands were beginning to edge possession and they went ahead on 17 minutes. Daniël de Ridder, the sole survivor from the side that beat Ukraine in the final last year when he was a substitute, scooped a high ball into Bakkal who held off Rukavina to shoot beyond Damir Kahriman.

Netherlands control
Serbia hit back with Dušan Basta and Boško Janković creating chances from both wings, but the Netherlands had the clearer openings. On 22 minutes Bakkal wriggled free and crossed to De Ridder who shot over with the goal gaping. FC Groningen defender Arnold Kruiswijk, at his home ground, made light of the absence of injured captain Ron Vlaar as the Netherlands approached half-time in command. Their good work, though, was nearly undone on 35 minutes when Boy Waterman came for and missed Kolarov's right-wing free-kick. Dutch anxiety gave way to relief as the ball bounced back off the post to safety.

Serbia press
Seconds after the restart Waterman made amends. Basta pounced on hesitancy from Erik Pieters and released a quick shot that the sprawling goalkeeper palmed away. Serbia had stepped up a gear and suddenly the Netherlands did not look so assured. De Haan was quickly off the bench, umbrella in hand, to voice his displeasure and his anger rose soon after when De Ridder's loose pass let in Kolarov. He pulled the ball back for Janković who could only shoot tamely at Waterman. Serbia were made to pay for that miss on the hour, De Ridder crossing low into the centre where Babel swept into the net, and their problems were compounded two minutes later when Kolorav was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Babel.

Rigters relish
Worse was to come, Rigters rounding Kahriman to score his fourth goal of the competition on 67 minutes. It equalled Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s mark last year and ensured he finished as the tournament's leading scorer. Kahriman restored some pride for Serbia when he kept out Babel's 71st-minute penalty and Dragan Mrdja raised spirits further when he headed in with eleven minutes to play. It was nowhere near enough to temper Dutch delight, however, which increased still further when substitute Bruins added the fourth late on.

　　“福普”
