Derby County have taken their transfer tally to three players in three days with the capture of West Ham goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.

The 25-year-old joins the Rams on an initial emergency loan deal that beats the 12noon deadline and makes him available for selection for this evening's clash at Hull City.

Bywater will then make a permanent move to Pride Park on August 27 and will sign a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Manchester-born Bywater began his career at Rochdale before being snapped up by the Hammers in 1998, while still a teenager.

He has made over 60 appearances for West Ham and has also had loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Hull, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cardiff City and Coventry City.

Bywater also has six England U21 caps.

The signing follows Mo Camara and Dean Leacock moving to Pride Park from Celtic and Fulham respectively.

New signing Hayden Foxe is hoping to reap the rewards of a self-imposed footballing exile.

The former Australian international, who agreed a five-month deal with United on Friday, is itching to play his first competitive game for almost two years .

Hayden featured in United's early pre-season matches as a trialist, but took over a year out of the game after suffering a fractured foot while at Portsmouth.

The defender admits there was talk that his career could be over - but the straight talking Aussie had no doubts in his mind.

"There was talk of it but it wasn't going through my mind," said Hayden, who spent 12 months at the Australian Institution of Sport undergoing re-hab.

"I made the decision to do a whole year away from England, Portsmouth and football. I did it properly and it's got me a big reward.

"If I'd carried on doing what I was doing, I'd probably have lasted for three or four months. That would have been it as far as the sport picture went.

"It was a big step to take a year out, but one that should let me play for another six or seven years."

And Hayden is aiming to take those first steps back into the spotlight sooner rather than later, wearing the white shirt of Leeds United.

"I'm very happy," he said. "This suits myself and the club. Leeds have been terrific and have shown a lot of understanding about my rehab and my foot.

"I'm looking forward to getting out there. They've given me a great chance over the next five months to show what I can do. I couldn't ask for anything better."

Aston Villa have told Niall Quinn that he will get an answer on Kevin Phillips next week.

Quinn wants to bring Phillips back to the Stadium of Light and has asked Martin O'Neill, the new Villa boss, if he is prepared to let the striker go.

O'Neill, who took over at Villa Park two weeks ago, is taking stock of his players before he begins to shape his squad for the new season.

The Sunderland manager said: "We are led to believe from Aston Villa that we'll get a decision about Kevin's future on Monday. There could be a bit of movement, not in time for tomorrow's game, but we're working every so hard."

Meanwhile, another of Quinn's targets Andy Reid looks set to stay at Tottenham.

The Black Cats boss has revealed that his latest bid for the Republic of Ireland winger has been turned down by the north London club.

Quinn said: "I'll be quite honest, we put in an excessive bid for Andy Reid, we upped it a couple of times, and at this moment in time we're getting no joy from Spurs, so we've got to get on with it. We may have news on Monday about a similar type of player."

Quinn is scouring the transfer market in search of new players.

He said: "I won't just panic buy for the sake of it, I will only bring in players if they are better than those we already have here."
