Newcastle and Celtic offer Bridge way out of Bridge

Newcastle and Celtic are believed to be ready to offer Wayne Bridge a route out of Chelsea by preparing £1m bids for the left-back. The player faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge with Arsenal's Ashley Cole preparing to move across London and, concerned about keeping his England place, he is keen to secure first-team football.
Bridge is training with Chelsea's first-team squad here but is aware the Premiership champions hope Cole will join them before they move to Chicago on August 3 for their match against a Major League Soccer all stars team. Chelsea's chief executive Peter Kenyon will not join the team until they have relocated to the mid-west, remaining in London to tie up transfer business.
That will focus on finalising Cole's £20m-plus move from the Emirates Stadium - in spite of the insistence last week of his manager Arsne Wenger that there had been no dialogue between the two clubs - and Kenyon's discussions are now expected to involve talks about Bridge's exit. Newcastle, who paid Chelsea £5m to take Damien Duff north last week, are hoping to return to the club for a similarly good-value signing.
Celtic's manager Gordon Strachan worked with Bridge at Southampton and is eager to enlist a player who can bring direct forward running to his left flank. Bridge knows that, with West Ham's Paul Konchesky having impressed in recent seasons, he will have to play first-team football if he is to retain his international place in Steve McClaren's new England.
With Asier Del Horno having departed for Valencia last week, Cole would be Chelsea's only specialist left-back and William Gallas will be acutely aware of the implications of Jose Mourinho's paucity of options in the position. The France international centre-half is unhappy at constantly having to fill in at full-back.
Chelsea are keen to secure a longer-term contract for Gallas, who remains away from the squad after being granted an extended holiday following France's involvement in the World Cup final against Italy on July 9.
Though Mourinho declared last week that he hoped to announce developments on Gallas's contract this week, the player's absence has prevented Chelsea from holding talks about the four-year extension they hope to offer him. |
