Owen Hargreaves believes that his future at Bayern Munich is untenable after being fined and "humiliated" by the club's general manager, Uli Hoeness, for expressing his wish to join Manchester United.
The England midfielder abandoned plans to release a statement on his future last night after his relationship with Bayern deteriorated further following revelations in the German media that Hoeness accused the player of "prostituting himself out to Manchester United".
Hoeness is also understood to have subjected Hargreaves to a dressing-down in front of his Bayern team-mates ahead of last weekend's game against Bochum, which Hargreaves at sat out due to a virus. He is expected to speak out today after being urged by his advisers to make a considered response to Hoeness' comments and the club's decision to fine him £17,000 as punishment for making public his interest in a move to Old Trafford.
United are prepared to treble Hargreaves' £20,000-a-week wages, but the player's attempts to escape from his Bayern contract have been firmly rebuffed by the German champions.
Hargreaves, 25, still has four years left to run on his contract and, having already lost Michael Ballack to Chelsea during the summer, Bayern are determined to keep him.
Having told Hargreaves to "keep his mouth shut" in another outburst, Hoeness' confrontational language has left the Canadian-born midfielder fearing his relationship with Bayern is at breaking point. He has been left to train with the club's fringe players this week while his team-mates travelled to Barcelona to play a friendly against the European champions. He is due to link up with the squad again today when they return from Spain.
With the transfer window due to close in seven days, however, the Hargreaves camp have admitted that "tension is growing" as the clock ticks towards the deadline and the player is now hoping to agree an amicable exit from Bayern. |
