Hargreaves demands respect from Bayern

England midfielder Owen Hargreaves said Bayern Munich executives were aware of his continued interest in a transfer to Manchester United even if he realises they do not want to let him go home.

In an interview with Bild newspaper on Friday, Hargreaves said it was out of his hands whether the two clubs would be able to reach a deal by the Aug. 31 close of the transfer window but he made clear he has not given up hope of a transfer.

'I've given everything to Bayern Munich for the last nine years and I want to be treated with respect,' said Hargreaves, 25. 'I simply want it to be accepted that Manchester would be a great step for me.'

Canadian-born Hargreaves was voted England's best player at the World Cup finals in a poll by the Football Association.

He has been at Bayern since joining the club as a teenager in 1997 and his current contract runs through June 2010.

Bayern sporting director Uli Hoeness has criticised Hargreaves for publicly expressing his desire to go.

Hoeness has repeatedly rejected a reported offer of 25 million euros ($32 million) and said he wouldn't sell Hargreaves for 50 million euros.

'The manager doesn't want to let me go. That's his right,' said Hargreaves. 'But he knows exactly what I want.'

Asked by Bild if that was an immediate transfer, he said: 'It's simply a great challenge. I'm an England player, part of my family lives near Manchester. A lot of things come together.'

Hargreaves was hit with a 25,000-euro fine from Bayern this week for insubordination after he called the Manchester United offer 'simply fantastic'.

Hargreaves on Friday defended his decision to extend his contract last year to 2010 in Munich.

'It was a great honour for me at the time,' he said. 'In the meantime, a lot of things have developed for me in a different way. I have a great chance to become a key player for England.'

Hargreaves, whom Bayern hoped could fill a void left when Michael Ballack left for Chelsea, said he is not worried about being banished to the bench.

'The coach knows what I can do,' he said. 'And so do the fans. I always give everything I have. That won't change no matter where I play.'

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has threatened to report Manchester United to FIFA if they do not give up their pursuit of Hargreaves.

Manchester United are watching Norway international Kristofer Haested.

The Premiership giants put the promising midfielder under the microscope on Thursday night during IK Start's Uefa Cup tie with Drogheda United.

The Red Devils sent their Irish scout Joe Corcoran to watch the youngster and he confirmed he had been instructed to run a check on Haested.

"I got a message from United's chief scout Jim Lawlor to go to exclusively track Haested," Corcoran told Faedrelandsvennen.

Though Start lost the game 1-0, the Norwegian outfit still progressed to the first round proper of the Uefa Cup after a tense penalty shoot-out victory.

Haested is thought to have impressed in the match and was delighted that his 'favourite club' had come to monitor his ability.

"I didn't know they were here, but it is, of course, nice that my favourite club are here to see me," said Haested.

"If they were impressed by what they saw here today, I don't know, but generally I'm a bit fed up with the all the speculation over professional players."

United had also watched Haested in international action last week when Norway drew 1-1 with Brazil in a game which also featured current Red Devils favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sir Alex Ferguson will now decide whether to bid for the central midfielder, or continue tracking his progress, with Start due to face Ajax in the first round of the Uefa Cup.

Carlos Tevez's agent has claimed that his charge is nearing a move to England.

Chelsea have been leading the chase in recent months, but Manchester United and Arsenal are also both known to be keen.

Tevez fell out with his Brazilian club Corinthians at the weekend when he walked out following their game with Botafogo - claiming he would not play for them again.

Corinthians coach Emerson Leao has not been shy in condemning the Argentine striker - who looks as if he could be on his way to Europe.

Adrian Rucco, Tevez's agent, admitted a move to The Premiership was on the cards.

"Tevez is very close to moving to an English club," said Rucco.

A host of clubs from Europe are interested in Tevez, with Milan and Bayern Munich also linked.

But Corinthians director Humberto Grondona confirmed that they were under the impression Rucco was setting up a move to England.

"I am convinced that Carlos will go away to some European league," Grondona told La Nacion.

"His representative, Adrian Rucco, was in Rome three days ago and now he has gone to England to look for a club for him."

Reports in France have already stated that Rennes have made contact with Chelsea about the possibility of taking Tevez on loan, should The Blues sign him and decide to let him leave immediately.

Ferguson denies illegal approach by United for Hargreaves
By Andy Hunter
Published: 26 August 2006

Despite the threat of an official complaint to Fifa, the world game's governing body, and an admission from Owen Hargreaves that he has received a "fantastic offer" from Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday rejected Bayern Munich's claims of an illegal approach for the England international as he maintained his pursuit of the £17m-rated midfielder.

The Bayern president, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has threatened to report United for "tapping-up" Hargreaves, who has been informed he is not for sale at any price.

The accusation that United were guilty of an illegal approach for a player who is fully aware of their interest and offer, however, was dismissed by Ferguson, who has again been linked with a move for the Argentina striker Carlos Tevez.

"I have not spoken to the boy," said the United manager. "I have not read the comments and I know nothing about it but that is not right [that United made an illegal approach]."

Ferguson also refused to withdraw his interest in Hargreaves. "I don't know if [chief executive] David Gill met Rummenigge at the Champions' League draw in Monaco but we just need Bayern to tell us what is happening."

An agent for Tevez last night insisted his client was on the brink of a move to the Premiership having walked out on the Brazilian club Corinthians earlier this week.

Bayern do dirty on Owen

By NEIL CUSTIS

BAYERN MUNICH double-crossed Manchester United after agreeing a £12million fee for Owen Hargreaves.

The England star had a medical on August 15. But Bayern pulled the plug just as the deal was due to be confirmed two days later.

They ordered Hargreaves back to Germany and upped their asking price to £17m.

Bayern have since been accusing United of an illegal approach.

And their chief executive Uli Hoeness branded Hargreaves, 25, a ‘prostitute’ for offering himself to the Premiership club.

United are now hoping Old Trafford director Bobby Charlton’s friendship with the Germans’ president, Franz Beckenbauer, can help smooth the move before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Bayern agreed the deal the day before Hargreaves played for England against Greece.

An announcement was set for the day after the Old Trafford international — until Bayern pulled out.

It is believed their stubbornness may be simply to placate their fans who are already angry at losing Michael Ballack to Chelsea.

But Hargreaves has made it clear he wants to quit Munich.

He accused the Bundesliga champions of treating him with no respect after nine years of service to the club.

Hargreaves said: “I’ve given everything to Bayern and I want to be treated with respect.

Bayern: Reds have ended Owen hunt

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claims Manchester United have ended their interest in midfielder Owen Hargreaves - for now.

Rummenigge says Hargreaves can move to Old Trafford - but only when his contract at Bayern expires in four years' time.

"He is free to swap sides - but not before July 1, 2010," said Rummenigge. "This is the last word. If I say this, then that is what it is going to be. He can swap sides on July 1, 2010 - no sooner."

Even though United have reportedly offered up to £16.9million for the 25-year-old, Bayern continue to insist they will not let him go.

Rummenigge has now declared the case closed after speaking to United chief executive David Gill.

"Manchester United have stopped their activities," he added. "I have been in touch with my colleague David Gill and they stick to what we have agreed to. That is correct and serious."
