(Isiah) Thomas screamed at and stared down San Antonio’s Bruce Bowen, yelled at Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich and turned Saturday night’s game into a referendum on Bowen’s defensive tactics. The explosive tirade seemed to ignite Thomas’s sluggish Knicks, but only to a point.
There was a virtual replay in front of the Knicks’ bench Saturday — Bowen had his right foot extended under Jamal Crawford as Crawford attempted a jumper. Crawford did not land on Bowen, but the mere sight of a similar play made Thomas snap.
As Crawford ran back up the court, Thomas said, “Next time he does that, break his feet!” He mixed in a profanity in that directive, and Bowen responded in kind, telling Thomas to go back to the bench “before you get a technical.”
Thomas and Bowen were assessed technical fouls, and Popovich got up to protest, walking toward midcourt. “You don’t talk to my players,” Popovich yelled at Thomas, who only became more incensed. Thomas, held back by the assistant Herb Williams, yelled back, “Tell your player to stop putting his foot under my player.”
