Greece studying F1 track
A lot of interest in the project
Soon a new track in Greece?
Greece is carrying out a feasibility study into the construction of a Formula One track, Tourism Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said Wednesday.
"The ministry is in the process of drawing up a draft law that lays out the legal and institutional conditions to advance in the coming months," the construction of a track, Avramopoulos said after a meeting with Prime Minister Costas Caramanlis.
Avramopoulos, who did not give any details on the proposed location of the circuit, said "interest in this project was big... and the organisation behind Formula One was also interested."
Greece has sought to benefit from the good reputation it gained from the highly successful hosting of the Olympics 2004 to attract international sporting events using sites built for the Athens Games.

New team unveiling could be within weeks
'I think there is a 65 percent chance' - Fry
Two Honda teams in Formula One in 2006?
The unveiling of an eleventh Grand Prix team for next year could be less than one month away, Nick Fry, the team chief of its expected technical backer BAR Honda, said today at Suzuka.
Honda made it known that they have been asked to supply engines to a mysterious new outfit earlier this week, when they confirmed they have bought a 100 percent shareholding in the BAR team. Fry said talks with the as yet unnamed outfit began more than two months ago.
"It is going to be very difficult to do next year but we will try to do it and see what happens," said Fry. "Honda would not have mentioned this unless it was relatively credible and you don't come out and say these things without a fair bit of activity having happened previously so I am sure the potential new team has done its homework. These are credible people with motor racing experience and the financial backing to do the job. We are not talking about an under-funded team here, and clearly they have convinced Honda, Bernie (Ecclestone) and us that this has got potential."
"I think there is a 65 percent chance, certainly better than evens, that it will happen because if it was not that we would not be saying anything. They have a high degree of capability, proven capability to put together a team."
Fry refused to reveal the nationality of the company behind the new team, which is understood to have a strong grounding in motorsport and, due to the Honda link, has been rumoured to come from Japan. He confirmed the agreement would be for the supply of an up-to-date V8 engine as well as technical support and suggested that the outfit would have to be based in Britain to maximise the support BAR plan to provide.
The deadline for applications to race next year is in mid-November and with just six months to go before the 2006 season the team should be well on the way to completing their designs for a new car. Fry did not reveal the status of the chassis project but suggested that, rather than designing a brand new car, the teams creation would depend on them being allowed to use the car raced by BAR this year. Such a move is generally considered outside the rules and when asked how likely it would be that the regulations could be interpreted in a way that allows second-hand chassis Fry was cautious.
"Those discussions havent happened yet," he said. "Clearly there are well-defined rules in Formula One that spell out what you can and cant do but they do give the ability (to run old cars). We believe that is what Red Bull will do with their second team. There are ways of meeting those regulations while giving a good level of technical support. The agreement is to supply engine and technical support, and the definition of technical support is open ended. We have to obey the Formula One rules so it will be down to them to convince the FIA that is what they have done."
BAR Honda driver Takuma Sato, who will lose his drive to Rubens Barrichello next year, has been offered a race seat at the new team if it is given the go-ahead and BAR test driver Anthony Davidson could also join.
"It is obviously a very good place for Taku to go," Fry continued. "Obviously with Honda engine backing, the same engine as we are using next year, it is not going to be a year out of date engine, so it is promising for him. Anthony has got a good chance, would be my view. He has proven himself and he keeps proving himself. At the last test, last week, he did an absolutely sensational job and he wants to drive a race car. He is well known to Honda and we would not stand in his way, even though it would be a loss to our testing efforts if he went elsewhere, but it is not something we are going to prevent him from doing."

Honda to retain BAR structure
Saying goodbye to the BAR name
Fry to continue with Honda F1 in 2006
Honda confirmed at Suzuka today that they will retain the current BAR Honda operating structure when they take over full control of the team next year. The Japanese manufacturer confirmed in Tokyo Tuesday that they will take over the remaining shares in BAR owned by British American Tobacco and re-name the team in 2006.
At a press briefing in the Suzuka paddock here Thursday Honda President Yasuhiro Wada confirmed: "There will be no major structural changes, the organisational structures and everything will stay as we are today. The name might be different, no more BAR, but we haven't finalised the name of team yet."
Nick Fry was installed as the BAR team chief at the end of last year, replacing former boss David Richards, and he has helped turn around a disastrous start to the season into a strong finish. He confirmed he will be staying at the helm of the new fully-backed Honda team and also confirmed that BAT sponsorship will remain to the end of 2006.
"Obviously with tobacco sponsorship ending at the end of next year, rather than leave the situation open for another year it was decided between BAT and Honda to clear it up once and for all," said Fry. "Once all the legal bits and bobs are sorted out it will be 100 percent Honda owned, but there is no change for my future and the plan next season is also to continue with Lucky Strike sponsorship. Lucky Strike are keen to continue until the end of 2006, we don't see a lot of change just because the equity has changed."
The news, however, means that the BAR name, which entered the sport in 2000, is likely to be no more after next week's Chinese Grand Prix with this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix its penultimate race. Their best result remains the second places scored by Briton Jenson Button last year and they are yet to win a race despite a strong season in 2004 and a great optimism for this season.
After finishing second in the constructors' championship last year they took a tumble at the start of this season and have failed to fight for the elusive victory they had expected to attain. But Fry wants the name to go out on a high.
"We come to every race with the objective of winning, otherwise we would stay at home and do the gardening. Obviously it's been more difficult this year, the car continues to improve. We have upgrades on the car for this Grand Prix and we will be getting more in Shanghai. We are going to push forward and do the best we can."

Alonso predicts Schumacher comeback
''Michael is still Michael' - Alonso
Schumacher cannot be discounted in 2006...
New world champion Fernando Alonso insisted today at Suzuka that seven-time title winner Michael Schumacher can make a comeback next season despite his nightmare year in 2005. Schumacher saw his five-year reign at the top of the sport dramatically concluded this season after his Ferrari team slumped behind Alonso's Renault team and current championship runner-up Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren outfit.
But Alonso believes it is wrong to write of 84-race winner Schumacher in the future and said: "Michael is still Michael, he didn't change compared to previous seasons. The Ferrari was not as strong any more and he didn't get the opportunity to win many races but for sure next year will be again the favourite one to start the championship."
Raikkonen, who shook hands with Alonso in front of photographers having lost the title battle to him at the last race in Brazil, was equally sceptical about declarations of Schumacher's demise.
"I don't think Michael has lost anything of his speed, I just think they (Ferrari) have had a difficult season this year, their package has not been as good as before, so people are just thinking that he is a bit slower," he said. "I don't think that happens so quickly."
Schumacher, 36, is clearly heading towards the end of his career with 229 Grand Prix under his belt compared to Alonso, 24, who has completed 66 and Raikkonen, 25, who has done 84 races.
This year has been all about the battle between Alonso and Raikkonen after Alonso took the early lead and never relinquished it thanks to his R25's incredible reliability. The two drivers will be now focussing on helping their teams in a battle to win the constructors' title but both admitted their motivation is reduced now their own personal battle has come to an end.
"For the drivers the only important thing or the only thing that motivates you is the drivers' championship," said Alonso. "The constructors' is good because you feel part of the team but it is not so important for you. It is true there is not the same motivation for the last two races but in my case I will enjoy these two because I have no pressure or anything to do specially. I will do my best, go as quickly as I can and this is what I like."
Raikkonen, who like Alonso has won six races so far this season, added: "For me it is the same, I am happy it is only two races to go and I will try to do the best for the team in those races."
McLaren Mercedes are the ones to beat ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix and he will be trying to forget his championship disappointment and focus on beating Colombian team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya to victory.
This is the second time in three years that he has lost out on the title, the first coming in 2003 when he was narrowly beaten by Schumacher in the final race of the season here in Japan.
"I think the first one was closer so it was more painful," said Raikkonen. "This year we saw quite a long time ago that it would be very difficult to catch them We saw that they are very reliable and even though we kept winning they kept finishing behind us so unfortunately it wasn't such a big thing though, but of course we would rather win it than lose it."
He is confident he can fight back in his battle within the team, however, and added: "Some days Juan Pablo is quicker than me, other days I am quicker than him. There are two races to go, we will see who is going to be quicker."

Williams expecting a wet one
A soggy Japanese GP in prospect
According to meteorologists, the BMW Williams and the other nine teams have to expect difficult weather conditions at Suzuka this weekend. Rain showers will influence the team's work during all three days of action.
For the first free practice sessions on Friday morning (starting at 03:00hrs and 06:00hrs BST), fierce thunderstorms are expected.
The likelihood of rain is at 90 percent, with a predicted temperature of 26蚓. On Saturday, thunderstorms shouldn't be an issue, but the rain will continue. The Saturday free practice sessions and the qualifying (starting at 05:00hrs BST) will take place on a wet track.
Meanwhile, the temperature will slightly decrease to 25蚓. However, there's a small chance for improved conditions on race day. The likelihood of rain is at 60 percent, but there might only be occasional showers during the afternoon. The start of the Japanese Grand Prix is scheduled for 06:00hrs BST.
