Sunderland manager Roy Keane has confirmed that the club are close to signing veteran journeyman striker Andy Cole.

The former Newcastle star will join up with old team mate Roy Keane with whom he won the treble at Manchester United in 1999.

Having slipped down the pecking order at Portsmouth he was released by manger Harry Redknapp and was on the look-out for first team football.

He has found it in Sunderland who are desperate for Premiership experience in their squad as they look to retain their top flight status come May.


The Sunderland manager said: "I met with Andy on Monday in Manchester and he has agreed to come here for a season. He's having a medical today and his experience on the field will be vital.


"A lot of our players are lacking experience in the Premier League. That hasn't really been an issue to me, but if a player like Andy is available and he fancies coming to us, he's certainly a player we have to consider.

"Hopefully he'll come through the medical today with flying colours and he will train with us next week."

Cole signs for Sunderland

Andrew Cole has signed for Sunderland after completing a medical today.

The striker, 35, has penned a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light. He will not be involved against Liverpool tomorrow.

Cole said: "I'm very excited to be here. It is another challenge and hopefully I can use my experience to help the young players. I had a few options and I just thought this was a good one.

"I want to get a good week or 10 days' training under my belt and go from there."

A former Manchester United team-mate of Roy Keane, Sunderland's manager, Cole left Portsmouth at the end of last season.

He has also played for Bristol City, Newcastle, Manchester City, Fulham and Blackburn.

Only Alan Shearer has scored more Premier League goals than Cole, who has found the back of the net 188 times in the top flight.

Keane said: "Andrew's experience will be vital to us. He's a proven goalscorer and will bring a lot to our squad."

Cole, who becomes the club's ninth summer signing, has been given squad number 20 at Sunderland.
