Lazio have renewed their interest in Livorno goalkeeper Marco Amelia, after Juan Pablo Carrizo’s move stalled.
The Biancocelesti have been searching for Angelo Peruzzi’s replacement after the veteran custodian’s retirement at the end of the last term and seemed to have signed the River Plate No 1.
However, the Argentine ‘keeper has so far failed to confirm the paperwork necessary to become an Italian citizen, as he was hoping to obtain a passport thanks to his Piedmontese ancestors.
If the player’s non-EU status does not change Lazio are expected to pull out of the deal, instead opting to renew their interest in Azzurri international Amelia.
The world champion was already paired with a move to the Stadio Olimpico earlier this year, before Coach Delio Rossi and President Claudio Lotito set their sights on South American Carrizo.
Amelia was forced off with a minor injury during the Labronici’s friendly win over AEK Athens on Sunday, but should recover in time for the start of Lazio’s campaign.
The Biancocelesti face an early start to their season due to the Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest on August 14, by which time Rossi hopes to have a new No 1 in place.
In the meantime, Manchester City striker Bernardo Corradi could return to Lazio after learning that boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is interested in Sevilla star Frederic Kanoute.
Corradi has seen his chances of being given regular playing time limited by the arrival of £8.8m new-boy Rolando Bianchi and is reportedly interested in returning to the capital.
