Everton have reportedly told Preston that they will not offer more than £4m for striker David Nugent.
The News of the World hints that the Blues may feel Nugent will reject moves to any other club if he knows Everton are interested, which could force the Championship side to accept the offer, which is lower than their valuation of the player.

Manchester United pair could be on their way to Goodison Park
EVERTON are planning a double raid on Manchester United as they look to bring in England internationals Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson for a combined £8million fee.
Moyes has been a long-time admirer of former Leeds United man Smith and matched the Red Devils’ bid for him three years ago when he left Elland Road. During his time at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to convert him from a striker to a midfielder as he searched for a long-term successor for Roy Keane
But having suffered a broken leg in an FA Cup defeat at Anfield in February 2006, Smith struggled to regain a regular place in United’s starting line-up following his return to fitness, and like Richardson, 22, he finds the competition for places even more intense due to the big money summer arrivals of Anderson, Nani and Owen Hargreaves.
Smith, 26, who cost Ferguson £7m in 2004 has been told he can leave Old Trafford but despite attracting the attention of Newcastle, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough – who have bid £6m – he is prepared to wait for Moyes to sure up his interest.

Everton want Queudrue
Newcastle and Everton have emerged as suitors for Fulham defender Franck Queudrue.
The 28-year-old has proved himself to be one of the most consistent left backs in England during spells with Middlesbrough and now Fulham.
Queudrue, in England since leaving Lens in 2002, said recently that he would consider his future at Craven Cottage this summer and his agent claims Newcastle and Everton are monitoring his situation with interest.
"His technical skills and great left foot have attracted a couple of Premier League teams," Queudrue's representative Dominique Six told setanta.com.
"He is a professional and is under contract with Fulham. But if an opportunity occurs I will definitely study it. Newcastle and Everton regard Franck as a possible signing.
"Some Premier League clubs are looking for a left back, and Franck could be a good choice."

Blades In Talks With Everton's Naysmith
Sheffield United are holding talks with Everton's right-back Gary Naysmith after selling utility-man Phil Jagielka to the Toffees for £4 million.
England B international Jagielka completed his switch from Bramall Lane to Goodison Park on Wednesday, following confirmation that the Blades would be relegated from the Premiership.
The relegation triggered a release clause in Jagielka's contract.
But while he and Everton enthuse over their new relationship (actually, renewed relationship: Everton released Jagielka as a youngster), Blades manager Bryan Robson is now engaged in talks with Naysmith, the versatile, left-sided Scotland international.
28-year-old Naysmith could move across the Pennines to Sheffield as part of the Jagielka deal as Robsoon seeks to bolster his squad in defence and midfield.
Naysmith is concerned about his prospects of regular first-team football at Goodison, where competition for places is intensifying, an it could be that becoming an integral part of the Blades' push to achieve an immediate promotion back to the top flight will appeal to the Scot. |
