Everton rival Spurs, Benfica for Adu

Everton have joined the race for Real Salt Lake attacking midfielder Freddy Adu.
Adu's sensational form at this month's U20 World Championships in Canada has reignited the interest of Europe's major clubs.

Everton, along with Tottenham and Celtic, have been in contact with MLS in recent days about Adu's availability, while Benfica are also keen.

Indeed, Maisfutebol says Benfica have a major advantage over their UK rivals as Adu will not require a work permit to continue his career in Portugal.

PIENAAR DEAL COMPLETED

Steven Pienaar has been granted a work permit for his move to Everton.

Pienaar is already in Los Angeles with the rest of the squad and he has now been given the go ahead to officially kick off his Everton tenure.

The South African international, 25, joins from Borussia Dortmund on a year-long loan.

"I am really excited to have joined a traditional club like Everton," he told evertonTV.

"It is always a good opportunity for the players to play in Europe and I am looking forward to making a return myself as I missed it last season."

Pienaar had previously been at Ajax before moving to Germany.

He will wear the number 20 shirt this season.

Everton chief hints at more transfers to come

Everton will have the squad depth they need before the start of the season, according to chief executive Keith Wyness.

Heading into hectic domestic and UEFA Cup campaigns, they have sealed only one major signing during the summer - £4million midfielder Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United.

But Wyness has told supporters not to get too anxious.

He said: 'Some transfer windows develop early, some develop late. We will have the bodies and the faces in before the start of the season.

'We are very active in a lot of things behind the scenes.'

South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar is following Jagielka to Goodison Park on a 12-month loan deal from Borussia Dortmund, subject to a work permit.

Pienaar, 25, moved to the Bundesliga from Ajax in 2006 and has made 25 appearances for the club.

He signed a three-year deal with Dortmund, taking the number 10 shirt vacated by Arsenal-bound Tomas Rosicky.

Wyness is mindful of the need for strength in depth and believes the Premier League will be tougher than ever next season.

He said: 'It is going to be an exciting season and probably the most competitive season in the league's history.

'A lot of clubs have strengthened in different ways with new ownership.'

Wyness is concerned at the high transfer fees that are being paid by some clubs this summer and insists Everton will never get embroiled in a bidding war.

Wyness said: 'There has been an inflated value on some of the transfers.

'I believe we have a value of a good player, what we consider a fair value, and we will not go above that.

'There is no doubt new stores of cash (from television deals) have made inflation happen.

'There has also been a rush of blood from new owners but I am sure things will settle back down.'

Wyness claims it is imperative the club move to a 50,000 all-seater stadium in Kirkby if they are to compete at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

A ballot is being held among supporters regarding the proposal with concerns already being raised about the club leaving Goodison Park and moving away from Liverpool.

Wyness insists that their new home - which could be ready by 2010 - will bring in much-needed additional revenue.

A significant proportion of those funds, he promises, will go into manager Moyes transfer budget.

Wyness said: 'David, like any manager, wants to be competitive. He knows he needs the spending power to remain competitive.

'Obviously this new stadium is a key revenue source.'

Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley is confident Everton could build a new stadium in the city.

Bradley has come up with four new sites which would mean it could stay in the city.

Two of the proposed sites are in the Liver Industrial Estate in Walton.

Another is on land near Scotland Road. A fourth is on the Axis site in Speke and the fifth is a redevelopment of the Goodison Park site.

He told the BBC: 'I am committed to ensuring that Everton Football Club have every opportunity to stay within the city.

'Everton do not have to leave the city, I am confident a deal can be done.'

EVERTON last night accepted a £4million bid from Sheffield United for James Beattie.

But the striker will wait to see if Blackburn Rovers can match that offer before deciding on a drop down to the Championship.

Blades manager Bryan Robson wants the former Southampton man to spearhead his team’s attempts to gain promotion back to the Premiership at the first attempt.

And while Beattie has remained in Los Angeles at Everton’s training camp this week, manager David Moyes is hoping to raise the cash to pursue other striking options.

The sale of Beattie will considerably boost Everton’s chances of replacing him in the forward line with Alan Smith and they will compete with Aston Villa for the signature of the Manchester United forward.

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes currently favours Paraguayan Roque Santa Cruz but is set to turn to Beattie if they can’t meet Bayern Munich’s asking price.

Meanwhile, Everton’s current number one striker Andrew Johnson is confident that the squad’s togetherness will again give them the edge over other teams in the new season.

After 10 days of team bonding in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, David Moyes’s team jet back home today ready to complete their preparations for the Premier League kick-off at home to Wigan in two weeks’ time.

And while last year’s Stateside excursion was

widely regarded as key to last year’s top-six finish, the spirit among the group has only been cemented by another American adventure.

“The team spirit here really is something special,” said Johnson. “A lot of other clubs might have other great things but they won’t have that.

“I’ve been at clubs where you get people who are part of certain groups and you get four or five going off. Then another four or five go off and it’s not healthy, it’s not good.

“You need to stick together in everything on and off the field and that’s shown at this club and on these tours.”

With just the one friendly at Real Salt Lake last week, Everton’s preparations have centred mainly on intensive training sessions in warm weather, one practice game and off-field bonding.

The football side will be cranked up another notch with Tuesday’s home friendly against Werder Bremen at Goodison Park, when new signing Phil Jagielka and on-loan Steven Pienaar will play in front of their new home supporters for the first time.

Despite just the two additions to the squad so far this summer, Johnson insists that the existing team ethic and calibre of players already at Moyes’s disposal are equipped to better last season’s achievements. Which is why Johnson sees the one-year contracts handed to Alan Stubbs and Lee Carsley as every bit as important as the five-year deals Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill penned this summer.

“You just can’t take away the fact that we have some top, top players here,” added Johnson.

“You talk about Mikel and Tim signing new contracts but to see Cars and Stubbsy still here, just in the changing room, is worth its weight in gold.

“And not forgetting the performances they put in last year. Stubbsy was brilliant, he was probably my player of the year in the second half of the season, and Cars was brilliant in that holding role.”

MOYES WANTS MORE

David Moyes has reiterated his determination to bring in new faces to Everton.

The Goodison chief has often spoken of his preference to bringing in players early in order to give them time to gel with his close-knit squad during the pre-season training programme.

Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar have had that opportunity - and have settled in well during the US Tour.

Back home in England reports have been rife linking the Blues with new faces. Click here to review the What The Papers Say section.

The manager admits he is keen to make further additions to his ranks.

He told evertonTV: "Last year we had three (new signings) in early but hopefully these two (we have signed already) have settled in and will make a good start but I have to say we are hoping to bring in another couple of new faces.

"The disappointing thing is that I always like the boys to be in early for pre-season because I think it is important, especially the way we try to have this club and the spirit we have amongst the players. But the two that are here already have fitted in very well."

Speculation is sure to continue regarding potential new arrivals. evertonfc.com will be the first with the news when new signings are made.
