Didier Drogba is next on Manchester City’s hit-list after their bungled attempt to sign Kaka - and they have told Chelsea to name their price.
City, who confirmed on Wednesday that Nigel de Jong had joined them from Hamburg for £15million, are determined to make at least one more significant signing this month.
Drogba has emerged as a rival for the centre forward position, after another bid for Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz was rejected.
City offered £15m, paid up front, for Santa Cruz, but have again been turned down by Rovers, who want £3m more.
Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari last week admitted he is prepared to sell
players at the right price and City are ready to match his valuation if there is an indication that a deal can be done.
Drogba was axed from Chelsea’s last two squads - for the FA Cup replay success at Southend last week and the 2-1 win over Stoke on Saturday - however, he is expected to return against Ipswich in the FA Cup this weekend.
Drogba, 30, aware of City’s interest as well as that of his former club Marseille, has
scored only one League goal this season.
Scolari lost patience with him after a lame display in the 3-0 mauling at Manchester United and he was dropped and made to train with the reserves.
As revealed in Sportsmail, City have signed De Jong, who will make his debut
against Newcastle next Wednesday.
City also want Newcastle to swap keeper Shay Given for Michael Johnson, after slapping an £8m valuation on the midfielder.
Wigan manager Steve Bruce, who has boosted his spending power with the £14m sale of Wilson Palacios to Tottenham, was quoted £8m when he made an enquiry about Johnson last week.
Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear looks to be losing his battle to hold on to Given, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Spurs.
City, reported to have made a fresh £5m bid for Given, 32, are understood to be prepared to offer up to £8m.
Kinnear would want Johnson as a makeweight but the Eastlands club value him as highly as Given.
City were knocked back with what Kinnear described as a 'cheeky' £3m bid for the keeper and could move for Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini, who is also wanted by Spurs.
