Tai Po earn a point in debut
Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:11
SINGAPORE: Tai Po's AFC Cup debut ended with honours even after they were held to a 1-1 draw with Geylang United at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Tai Po took the lead through Ghanaian winger Annan Kwesi midway through the second-half, but Geylang replied almost immediately through defender Ratislav Belicak's header to take a share of the points in the Group H encounter.
Both teams employed a conservative formation, leaving lone strikers upfront and an extra midfielder just in front of the defence.
It was no wonder then that chances were few and far between. Apart from long range sighters from Ye Jia and Eagles captain Miroslav Latiak, both keepers were virtual spectators for majority of the first-half.
Geylang's Itimi Dickson came close to opening the scoring on the quarter hour mark but he was to be denied twice in the matter of seconds.
Having seen his initial header from Muhammad Fazly's free kick blocked by a defender, Dickson could only nod the loose ball into the grateful hands of goalkeeper Li Hon Ho.
There was a contentious moment three minutes before the break when the Tai Po players protested that Sze Kin Wai's right wing cross was handled by Syed Thaha but referee Yu Ming Hsun pointed for a corner instead.
From that corner, Tai Po had a double chance almost identical to Dickson's earlier efforts.
Nanmi's header from captain So Loi Keung's delivery was superbly saved by Yazid Yasi, but he could only parry it to the waiting Yang Xu.
Amazingly, Yang headed the rebound against the bar from just a couple of yards out, before the Geylang defence scrambled the ball away to safety.
The Tai Po players were left looking at the referee again midway through the second-half as he once more turned away their appeals for handball inside the box.
This time it was To Hon To's acrobatic bicycle kick which deflected behind off Eagles defender Walid Lounis but Yu once again waved aside the Hong Kong players' protests.
But they were celebrating after 69 minutes when the ever-dangerous Kwesi exchanged passes with Sze in the area before striking a low left foot shot past Yazid for the opener.
The lead would only last for five minutes, though. First, Latiak's powerful drive from the edge of the box was superbly palmed wide by the Tai Po custodian for a corner.
But Li was powerless to stop Belicak's diving header from Dickson's corner, the defender left unattended in the middle of the six yard box to level for the Singaporeans.
Kwesi had one last chance in the 86th minute to double his tally and grab the points for his side.
The left winger was quickest to react to a loose ball in the area after another excellent corner from So but Yazid reacted quickly to block Kwesi's close range shot. |
