HKFA consider fielding team in Chinese league

HONG KONG: Hong Kong Football Association is mulling over the plan to form a team to play in the Chinese league.
Following their triumph at the East Asian Games last year, HKFA Chairman Brian Leung Hung-Tak has been looking for ways in which Hong Kong can improve standards even further.
Leung met Chinese Football Association vice president Lin Xiaohua during the recently concluded EAFF Championship in Tokyo and declared his interest to the latter.
“CFA was very positive in this matter. They proposed us to start from the second division or the first division. If we start from the first division, then we can buy a ‘membership’ or participate as a special invitee or football association,” said Leung.
HKFA now has eight teams in the top flight, 13 in the second division, 20 in the third division and 16 in the community league, as well as youth and reserve leagues.
Leung said the opportunity to play in the Chinese league would be open to all Hong Kong clubs, though financially, it may prove difficult for clubs to meet the requirements.
“This (Chinese league participation) plan will cost around HK$100 to 200 million (US$13-26 million). Interested clubs can buy and take over an existing Chinese club or form an all new ‘Hong Kong’ team to play in their league.”
“HKFA will help the respective club as much as possible but will never interfere in its management and operations.
“We will only be taking token benefit from the club’s ticketing and merchandise revenue for Hong Kong football development purposes.”
China has four clubs in the AFC Champions League, with the AFC criteria barring clubs from outside the MA taking part in their elite league.
However, any Hong Kong team would not participate in the top-tier Chinese Super League and may therefore be allowed to compete. |
