Wong defends tactics after draw

SINGAPORE: Geylang United coach Mike Wong insisted thoughts of an opening AFC Cup defeat never entered his head after defender Ratislav Belicak's header saw the S-League side grab a 1-1 draw with Tai Po at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Ghanaian winger Annan Kwesi had given the visitors the lead midway through the second-half but Belicak's diving header from Itimi Dickson's corner levelled the Group H contest for Geylang.
"I didn't think we would lose. We still had 15 to 20 minutes after they scored," said Wong.
"I don't think we were defensive, it's just that certain players were nervous. With a home game first, that will do us good. Now when we travel, we will have a more steady approach.
"I wouldn't say we didn't exert ourselves. This is our first game in the AFC Cup, so we cannot go in blindly and all-out attack.
"I was not sure how strong the Hong Kong team was going to be. The only problem we faced was when they tightened up in defence. We lacked movement and failed to create the space."
Wong was, though, disappointed with the manner in which his side conceded.
"We can't give the ball away in the defending third and there was definitely a lack of communication," he added.
However, Tai Po's goalscoring hero Kwesi admitted Geylang's somewhat cautious approach caught his side off guard.
"For 10 to 15 minutes, we had the time to kick the ball around by ourselves.," he said.
"So yes, we were quite surprised, and did not see what we expected from Geylang."
However, the Ghanaian was delighted to get on the scoresheet, giving the Hong Kong outfit the lead after exchanging passes with Sze Kin Wai in the area before striking a low left foot shot past keeper Yazid Yasi for the opener.
"Yes, I'm very excited about that," he said.
"After all, we are playing in the AFC Cup for the first time.
"But the coach gets the biggest credit. He decides who plays, and how we play, so all credit has to go to him.
"In the end, it doesn't matter who scores. We got what we came for."
Coach Andy Cheung agreed and was satisfied to return to Hong Kong with a point.
"Back in Hong Kong, we play on artificial turf as well, but the grass is a little longer than back home," he said.
"Still, it's difficult because it's an away game."
